| Lump on foster dog's belly I am fostering a 13 year old yorkie that was adopted from a local animal shelter, and then returned about 2 months later when the adopters' child was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I just got her last Thursday. She has alot of black wax in her ears, and scratches at them constantly. (ear mites?) Also, she was scooting on her bottom outside, so when I took a closer look at her bottom, found that she has some significant swelling. There is no bleeding or other discharge, tissue is soft. She isn't licking at it, just occasionally scooting on it in the grass. She was initially checked by the shelter's vet, and I have a copy of their report. It does not mention either of these conditions, so I don't know if they are something new, or just missed in the initial exam. She was in pretty rough shape when she arrived, so they had plenty of other things to treat. She has an appointment with the vet tomorrow, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone here would have an idea what is going on with her bottom? Photos attached. |

| How could they miss that? But it doesn't look new. That poor girl I don't have any advice other than ask the vet (which you are going to do). I just wanted to say Thank You for taking care of this precious girl!!

| Mammary tumor? Anal gland issue? Hard to tell by the pictures. Glad she is going to the vet and you are taking such good care of this "older" girl. Good for you, keep us posted, wishing you the best.

| She hasn't been spayed, and the shelter opted not do do it when she was adopted out originally due to her age. So I wondered if she might be in heat. But we have 3 male, neutered dogs, and none of them are reacting in any way to her. Our neighbor had adopted an older gal who wasn't spayed for the same reason, and especially one of our boys ALWAYS knew when she was in season. I'm hoping it is just that, and not something more serious. She is such a sweet little thing. She's in desperate need of a dental. The original exam also said she had bloodwork consistent with Addison's disease, but had few other symptoms of the disease. I'm taking a urine sample with her tomorrow to see if that might give us a clue. I'll let you know what we find out tomorrow. |

| Poor girl was used as a breeder...then probably dumped. It looks so uncomfortable, hope some tender loving care will soothe her & she will improve. You're so wonderful for fostering her.

| Oh my this poor sweet baby. It's hard to tell by looking at the pictures. It looks like maybe she has some anal glad issue and I do agree that she looks to be in heat. Just make sure sure they full blood panel work up on her as well. Get her ears cleaned real good. Bless you for helping this sweet girl.

| Bless you for fostering... she is a cutie. Will check back in to this thread to find out what your vet tells you about her two problems.

| Little Abby went to the vet yesterday. The vet said that the lump was "lady parts" that have gotten loose from being bred constantly. But he also found a hard lump on one of her mammary glands. She's going in on Wed morning to get her teeth cleaned and a needle biopsy on the lump. They'll also clean her ears and give her a good going over while she's sedated. The vet was the one who originally saw Abby when she was surrendered to the shelter back in September. He said she was "naked as a mole rat" and was really under weight. He wasn't sure she was even going to survive, so that's why they didn't do a dental then. But her adopters obviously did a good job of fattening her up and getting her coat to grow back in. So once she gets her teeth and ears clean she's going to be looking AND feeling much better! |
