| Free Feeding vs Scheduled Hi all, Have a 12-week old baby and he was free fed by the breeder. I worry this isn't realistic to have him go to the bathroom outside. I would like to get him on more of a schedule but have been terrified by the thought of hypoglycemia. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, this is a great forum! |

| When I first brought Blazer home I would set down his daily allowance in the morning and pay attention to when he would eat. About 15 minutes after eating I'd take him out to poo. He developed his own schedule of eating about three times a day- morning, noon, and evening. Now I give him his daily allowance in 3 divisions but leave the bowl down for him to eat when he is ready to. He is SUPER good about letting me know that he needs to go out (he's just under 6 months now.)

| How does he let you know he needs to go? My puppy just won't go outside even though I take him out all the time! |

| Zeus and Ody, my cat get fed 2x a day. Puppies should be fed 3x a day. A lot of people feed at 7am, 1pm and 7pm, but, of course, it depends on your schedule.

| I think puppies should be free feed because they need to eat so often and they are growing.

| I free feed. However I give the amount of food compared with his weight- what it tells me on the back of his food bag. He gets 1/8 of a cup in the morning and 1/ 8 around 4. He never over eats- some dogs do. It works for us to free feed!

| Schedule.I feed 3 x a day. I can keep track. I weigh Moki and track his weight. He's a little more than he should be. I know because he has a little back fat. I adjust when he get to fat. I feel if the dog get to fat thats not healthy either. Means he's getting enough to eat also.. Then after he eats I know in ~1/2 hr he's ringing his bell to go outside. | I might add schedule works for Moki. He's a good eater and gobbler. Single pup he will eat all I put out. The whole bag or until he explodes. But If he was finicky and the only pup I probably would free feed. I had a Pom that would only eat a nibble every few hours. Or never eat. So it does depend on what good for the pup. JMO/JME |

| When Blazer needs to go out he sits at the front door and barks once or whines a little OR he scratches at the door. When my big dog needs to go out he sits at the door and whines.

| I schedule feed my adults and free feed any youngsters up to a year old. Mine will go to the door during the day, and hit the pee pad after we all go to bed. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think it's important to free feed all puppies, they have growth spurts and some days will eat much more than other days, and this having food available 24/7 will help prevent hypoglycemia.
