| Doxepin, any thoughts on this drug for allergies and nervousness? Vet just recommend ed this for Reese, even with atypical cushings, plus a food change to royal canine for allergies. Based on my conversation with my regular vet he is now recommending the above. She is prone to yeast infections of the ear and vaginal infections. Based on my concerns over Reese holding in her urine, rubbing her ears and head on her pad and rolling around on the pad, not wanting to use it, constant licking of her paws and her new anxiety about fearing her food bowl by jumping back from it and crying to have the kibble dropped out on the floor, this is his latest suggestion. I am nervous about her becoming more of a couch potato now that she is on melatonin for atypical cushings and now an anti anxiety with benefits for allergies and new change of food from Hills Rd to Royal canine for allergies. Please please any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for all of my posts but I feel helpless and hopeless and watching her so out of sorts is very frustrating. Thanks again. |

| Doxepin/royal canine hypo allergenic HYDROLIZED PROTEIN dry food, ANY INFO PLEASE!! I hate to once again second guess my vet but since most do not seem to be too up on nutrition I called RC myself to see if by chance they did make a prescription hypo allergenic food that is lower in calories. My vet had told me they didn't and now was told by RC that they do have a prescription lower calorie one, by the above name. He also wanted to start both at the same time which concerns me. Am I correct in being concerned about doing two new things at the same time, food and a pill? Thanks so much for your help and sorry that I sound so crazed and frustrated but I hope you can all understand why. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Most dogs aren't sedated at all by Melatonin after they're on it a short while...so try not to worry about that too much, at this point. Based on your other thread, I realllly think your vet is overwhelmed and confused. Doxepin may help, sure, but I think you first need more answers about your girl - in terms of cortisol status and skin status. Until you know that, all else is kinda moot. It prob won't hurt, per se, to choose a food and start her on it...just keep in mind that an Internist might have a different idea in mind when you see them. Are you able to bathe her every couple days? That can help when they're in an acute skin issue. If allergies are also suspected, have you been giving Benadryl 3x a day?

| reeses continued strange behavior I thought she was doing better this morning but she is still hesitant about going on her pad. She might even be having pee accidents as welll as number twos. Obviously 2 is much easier to find than the pees. She seems to be using my dining room area rug as a pad and it is hard to tell on the pattern etc. She continues to rub her head and behind on the floor or the pad and seems to just stare at me when I take her into her room with the pad. I am totally perplexed and with so many issues going on I know I sound like a complete lunatic. Her hearing seems fine, probably due to her age not as great as it had been, but she still follows all I say at a regular level voice. She is simply acting weird. She is eating, but still hesistant about her bowl, same but to a lesser degree with her water. She isn't on benadryl and I am putting off even going for the new food and pill. I did make an appt with Dr. Peterson but he will be out of the country until her appointment on the 28th. Funny also how Reese doesn't seem to do these things when my husband comes home, which really makes me look like a bigger nut. Has anyone had a dog scurring around on their behind or rubbing her face from side to side on their pad or floor. I usually think that means ear infection, but her ears seem to be doing better. Now the problem seems to be more in her behind or her vaginal area. Help please!!!! At this point I should probably pick that anti anxiety pill up for myself. |

Do you have any diaper cream, hydrocorisone cream, or benadryl cream on hand? If you do, I would try this on her itchy parts; make sure you rub it in well to avoid her licking it off. It may help alleviate just a bit...maybe just take a small edge off for her. There is also hydrocortisone spray you can get at pet stores and perhaps in the human section of regular drugs stores. With the rubbing of the head...hard to say...could be ears like you're saying, or teeth, or eyes -- maybe press around on her teeth for any sore spots; pull down her bottom lid of eye to check for irritation. Things will get better for you both, I just know it .
