| DIY Raw Diet Does anyone do a DIY raw diet for your dog? Can you tell me what types of things you feed and how you decide how much? |

| Yes. However the diet my dogs are on are specific to their specific needs abd not a general raw diet.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Start here...but my suggestion would be to just read for a while, before jumping in: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...-learning.html I feel premade raw, which I love. I can see why you'd consider making your own - prob save a lot of money....but be careful; you want it to be balanced to avoid causing health problems that would cause way more $ and heartache; this is true w/ any homemade diet..ya just gotta do a lot of research. Also, there are a lot of brands out there now who have a "just add the meat" selection too. Meaning, you buy a pre-balanced dry mix - and add the meat as instructed. These would be balanced from the get go.

| There is a rawfeeding group on yahoo that I found to be very helpful when starting out (and even now!). http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ You'll find explanations on the amount to feed, how to incorporate organ meat, etc. on this website and of course you can search the archives to see how others began. How much to feed depends on the weight of your dog (generally 2-4% of their adult weight). My adult yorkie/poodle mix weighs a little under 7 pounds which is her desired weight. So I convert that to ounces, 112 oz. and then figure out what is 3% of that which is 3.36 oz. So I feed a total of 3-4 ounces of meat a day- and I feed once in the morning and once in the evening. I don't worry if I go over some, because I can adjust a boneless portion easily. I used an old post office scale my husband's office was getting rid of to weigh on in the beginning til I got used to eyeballing a 1- 2 oz. piece of meat! I feed venison, chicken thighs/legs, boneless breast, pork ribs, calf liver (a tiny amount a few times a week), chicken heart, lamb if it is on sale, etc. Venison is my main staple. Since deer hunting season is coming up in Virginia, I've already put the word out for my friends who hunt to save me some meat, so that is a way to save on food costs. There are a lot of raw feeders on Yorkie-talk who helped me tremendously when I started out. We added another yorkie (Biewer this time) to our family and he is now about 17 weeks. I had forgotten how much fun it was to introduce a puppy to raw feeding. Best of luck and I hope a lot of others who have much more experience than I do will chime in.

| I do! You've been given some good links and I'll add another of my favorites The Many Myths of Raw Feeding I typically feed all kinds of chicken and beef heart. Sometimes I feed chicken gizzards and hearts too and I try to add in some variety with pork or fish (mine don't really like fish) And sometimes I cheat and feed NV or Primal and when I do, I always feed something I can't really get like buffalo or venison. I feed 2-3% of their adult weights and at first I measured it but now I just eyeball it. I weigh my dogs every so often and tweak the meals based on whether I think they need to lose or gain weight and I use a scale just to keep it in perspective. Hope that helps.... |

| Glad I found this thread! I feed a raw food diet to my guys. Have for years now. They absolutely love their food. There are groups a couple of good groups on Facebook, one is Rawfeeding, the other is Rawchat. Great info! |
