Getting puppy to eat a meal Does anyone out there have any ideas on how to get a puppy to eat his meal? I have tried many different canned foods added to his Royal Canin puppy food however he still wants to eat like a cat. The problem being, I will be going back to work soon and since we have 4 cats in the house, we would prefer not to leave the puppy food out all day for the cats to get into. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had this problem with Kipper. Some of the other members suggested leaving the food out for 15 minutes and putting it up, making him realize the food needed to be eaten while it was available. It didn't work. He would eat if we were eating at the same time and he thought he was somehow getting what we had. The best thing was having our other dog, Buddy, eat the same food with him. I figured that it wouldn't hurt 8 year old Buddy to eat puppy food for awhile to get Kipper to eat. It worked like a charm. On the days that I must leave for work and no one is here, Kipper will not eat even if I leave out the food. He would only eat after he had calmed down from being "abandoned" for the hours I was gone. Such silly little critters! I wish you the best in figuring out what you can do to get your puppy to eat before you leave for work.

Still hand feeding I don't really know how to feed mine too.. i just got him yesterday and till now each time i try to feed him he will not eat by himself so i have to pick up the kibbles one by one and hand feed him.. .. he jumps around like a rabbit all around the kitchen and comes back to take another one.. i am afraid he will get this bad habit and i will be stuck with his feeding bowl

I know exactly what you are going through! Kipper did this to me and I despaired of ever getting him to eat on his own! I was so terrified he would have a hypoglycemic reaction if he didn't eat enough. I tried every kind of kibble available and resorted to using Cesar's Puppy Cuisine on his kibble...that is, until he began rejecting that, as well! Now he eats his kibble (EarthBorn Holistic Puppy Vantage) without anything on it. I think you will be able to wean him from having to eat out of your hand or rolling it across the floor to pounce on it like a kitty. I have never had such a picky eater and the stress of it was almost more than I could endure for awhile. Thankfully, Kipper does not have any digestive issues, so he can eat anything I try (which is mostly top quality foods, since I want him to be healthy for his lifetime). Be careful about feeding treats before he has had his puppy food. It filled Kipper up so that he was not motivated to eat his healthy food. I also suspect that the home where he was raised (with small children) provided him with a smorgasbord of people snacks! I wish you success!

Up all night I was up all most all night because i am scared he doesn't have enough food and water... since he is refusing to drink too . So every couple of hour i am giving him water with a dropper and feeding him the kibbles that was given to me by the breeder since she suggested that i use that. But after a week i plan on getting the blue chicken and oatmeal for the small breed puppy.

How old is your puppy? Not drinking or eating does sound concerning. I am glad that you are staying on top of it. I wonder if the stress of leaving "home" can cause these disruptions? I know that some puppies are competitive eaters, and when they no longer have that competition for the food in the bowl, they lose interest. I got Kipper at 8 weeks old and didn't have a hypoglycemic incident until he was about 12 weeks old. I had forgotten to make sure he ate some kibble before bed. Now, at 5 months old, he can choose his mealtime and even if it is earlier in the evening, he will not have a problem. He weighs 3#14 ounces.

Harley is 2 and he still does this with kibble. Adding a boiled egg to the kibble use to help in the mornings. Now he eats Primal Frozen Raw Formula, and he gobbles it up as soon as I put it in his bowl and mash it up a little bit. Trying a different kibble may help as well. Grain free is always great if it is available. I used a website, dogfoodadvisor.com, to check out all the brands. I think all the five star dog foods are grain free. They have a section for raw, too. Good luck!!

Several things that I did to get Mina to eat when I brought her home. Everymorning,on our way outside she got a little lick of peanutbutter or Karo syrup on my finger, she wouldnt touch Nutracal. I dont know if it kept her blood sugar up,but it was like priming the pump and made her realize that she was hungry so she would be ready to eat breakfast after she went potty. Mix 1T of Simply Nourish wet foot with kibble and warm in microwave. Sprinkle a tiny bit of parmasian cheese on the mixture, stir and warm. Mix a tiny bit of boiled chic in with kibble. These three things got rotated so she didnt get used to what I was doing. She is still fed twice a day, gets a BB cookie in the middle of the day and sometimes a carrot stick or dehydrated sweetpotatoe stick. Mina also has a waterbottle bottle in her crate that she can get to at all times during the day. I taught her to use this by mounting it in the crate and putting a tiny bit of peanutbutter on the end. She loved the smell, licked and was surprised that she could get a drink too. She lives with 4 other dogs and acts like an only child. Hope some of this helps, good luck.

Sasha my 4 year old used to be extremely picky. I've lost count of how many different foods I went through trying to find one that she would willingly eat. Just when I had decided to give up and do the "15 minutes down" technique, I had put her on Blue Buffalo and that was the hit. She has loved it ever since and has since eaten it for years. A few months ago, we got a new puppy and I think she was just protesting but she decided to stop eating the dry kibble. I tried a little bit of canned food mixed in and thats been a hit also ever since. I still only leave the food down for 15 minutes and 99.9% of the time, she finishes it all because she knows she always gets a biscuit once shes finished. Noah my 4 month old on the other hand thrives on food. I would also do the 15 minute technique with him but he doesn't leave the food for a minute! If he was free fed, he would probably eat an entire bag a day. I hope he stays like this though. I just love seeing them eat and be happy!
