| She had a flea...now what?! I was bathing Sami and I found a flea! It is the first one I have seen on her. I got it off and killed it. I give her Sentinel every month. Should I be doing something else? She must have picked it up in the dog park or my backyard...ugh.

| Yes you should be using a topical flea and tick preventive like Advantix or Frontline.

| Ok I will get some...do you have a preference? I just am not familiar with any. I thought the Sentinel was enough. We have had her since January and this is the first one.

| I prefer Adavintix because frontline doesn't seem to work where I live. Sentinel keeps fleas from reproducing but dose not kill them or keep them off.

| One flea? Sentinel makes it so adults can't have babies. They may pick up an adult and the drug won't kill it. It just makes it sterile. This is more than adequate in a lot of cases. When you see a flea on pup, more than likely it is not reproducing if pup is on Sentinel. If you are very worried about an infestation, you can add in a topical. I personally do not see a reason to use it monthly. You could if you want to though. You can do nothing at all or just give one dose this month or a Capstar. Frontline or Frontline Plus is fine although Frontline Plus adds an ingredient to deal with eggs already. Advantage is fine. Unless you have a tick problem, there is no need to use Advantix. Actually, It is healthier not to.

| Advantage II works really well. It kills fleas, larva, and eggs. If you do not have a tick problem you do not need the added chemical in Advantix. It is also waterproof so you can bathe your dog two days after application. You are not supposed to use it until 3 days after a bath. |

| If ticks are a problem then it could be indicated. But one of the i gredients, permethrin, is just not the best for them and there is no reason to use it for just fleas.

| Well, if you have a tick problem then you should use the Advantix. If you don't really have a tick issue it is best not to use the additional chemical on your dog if you do not need it. |

| Thank you all. I called my vet too. I am going to try Frontline. She has never had a tick, thank goodness.

| Alrighty we have pretty bad ticks here and frontline does nothing for them at all so if I didn't use Advantix Callie would have like a million ticks on her

| Fronline plus is the one that kills ticks but adter the formula change many have noted they improved results against chewing lice but fleas seem resistant now in adult form.
