My furkids Donating Member | I have posted on here several times of natural flea and tick repellent. After doing much research I found a couple of sites that give you "recipes" of different essential oils to mix together that our safe for our pets (don't think you can use them on cats) and to be used on humans as well...I mix 10 drops lemongrass oil, 10 drops peppermint oil, and 10 drops of lavender oil with 1 cup of water, Put in spray bottle, I spray and paper towel and wipe it all over the pups I also spray their harnesses with it....we haven't had any fleas OR ticks, Only draw back...where it is all natural it has to be applied every couple of days...but NO CHEMICALS!! That's the part I like,...I am going to post the 2 sites I have...hopefully they will work Aromatherapy Recipes for Dogs | Essential Oils for Dogs Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Fleas

| I definitely wanna look into a more natural way to repel ticks and fleas. Heartworms, I obviously don't mess around with, but when it comes to fleas/ticks... I have never seen one flea on him (even when we don't use meds for months) and lately it seems whenever I put him on preventative (advantix OR frontline) is the only time I SEE ticks. Like, literally, the last 3 times that I applied it, within a day or two, I'd find a tick or two on him. But yet he hasn't had any flea/tick medicine on him in probably close to 2 months and haven't found ONE. I swear they are attracted to it. It's like with me... I never get bit by mosquitoes until I apply bug spray. I swear there's something wrong with me, LOL So really, I find it pointless to use the stuff, unless the ticks were getting REALLY bad. So I'd be interested in putting some natural stuff on him just when I know we're going to be walking through long grass or the woods, etc.

| This is probably a really dumb question... but so do you take all these ingredients to repel ticks and then mix them together into one bowl or whatever? Then do you apply it topically to their shoulder blades like you would Frontline? What do you use to put it on their back so it doesn't make a huge mess? 1/2 oz. (15 ml) base oil (e.g. olive oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil) 7 drops Lavender 5 drops Geranium 3 drops Bay Leaf

| Depends on the area. But where I'm at Ticks aren't a problem unless you go into the brush. For a City/Suburban dog. Fleas aren't a problem with good diet and brushings. My dogs never get fleas except the few times the were kenneled. Then they just get a bath and bushings fleas are gone. IME dogs get alot of fleas if they are not brushed and have a poor diet. You can use a flea or nit comb after a bath and comb them all out and dispose of them JME But if you have a flea out break for what ever reason. I find a flea/nit comb to be the best. You get each flea out. Dunno about the other stuff but has always worked for me. Last edited by ironmike86; 08-05-2012 at 10:34 AM. |

I have been using the chemicals mainly as a preventative. I am going to try the natural route and see how it works. | |

| Yup. But every area is different. Tick and heart worm prevention maybe different. Don't have much ticks or sceeters here so what works for me maynot for someone else. But I'm going to follow this for the tick stuff. |
