| Puppy Likes ADULT food better then Puppy food I have a 5 yr old Yorkie who I have free-fed, because he only eats what he needs too, and its not alot. We just got a new baby, she is 6 months old, and she loves to eat the adult food, better then her puppy food. I am trying to get her to stick to the puppy food, but its hard, as she perfers the adult food which is Wellness small breed, Her puppy food is Royal Canin small bites. Any suggestions? Thankyou )

| As long as she is eating mostly her own puppy food, I think that should be fine for her to nibble on the big doggy food! The protein content is almost the same in your 2 formulas and the fat content is a little lower on the adult food. Puppies need higher protein and fat content. I would lean toward the adult Wellness food anyway since it has 3 animal protein sources at the top of the ingredients list (2 of them being meals which is good) over the puppy food although the baby still needs a higher fat content. I don't think there is much you can do to keep the pup out of the adult food if your older dog needs to free feed but if your pup is healthy and growing and not having digestive issues, I don't think there's a big problem to worry about. |

| Thankyou, I do give her vitamins Nuvet Plus as thats what the breeder was giving her. She seems very healthy, happy, I just worried about the adult food, as she likes to nibble in his bowl, and wont eat hers sometimes. I try to feed separate but the older one does not like his eating spot changed I have noticed. It is enough that he seems to just tolerate the puppy. I love Yorkietalk as I have learned alot on here. Thankyou so much for replying. )

| Aw! How long have you had your puppy? Hopefully the older one will get past just "tolerating" the pup and they will become best of pals! When I first got Toki, I had to keep her out of my parents' beagle's (Mindy) Kibble n Bits that was always out! I was able to convince my parents to switch Mindy to some Blue Buffalo thankfully. At least you have your adult dog on some very good food though! Toki has been off "puppy" food since she was 6 months or so. She's currently 10 months and eating grain-free Fromm in the evenings and raw in the mornings. I just try to make sure to pick grain-free foods for her that are higher in fat and protein like the other formulas labeled for puppies. She is doing great! Still annoying the older dogs that my family has though hahaha |

| I have had Isabella since she was 10 weeks old, she is around 4 1/2 pounds at the moment. My older Yorkie (Murphy) is 4 1/2 lbs at 5 yrs old. He does not seem to mind her being here, but she wants to play alot with him and he is not into playing that much we guessed. He does just seem to tolerate her, as he does not bother with her too much. She is always nipping at him and then running, she wants him to chase her, but he just pretty well trys to stay out of her way. I feel bad sometimes, as this was his house for 5 yrs, now he has to share it and us... ) not quite sure he loves the idea. When do you wing a puppy off puppy food?

| It's varies from person to person and what different vets will tell you. A lot of people wait until around 1 year but I just switched Toki around 6 months. I wanted to switch her to something grain-free from a smaller company that used quality ingredients so that kinda limits your options if you stick strictly to puppy formulas! I picked a grain-free formula that had similar amounts of protein/fat/nutrients that a puppy formula would have. She is doing really well! Toki weighs a whopping 9 1/2 pounds and is very strong and active! And I'm looking to add another young dog/puppy as well! I think it will be easier for Toki to accept a new housemate/playmate when she is younger than waiting until she is a couple years older. I think this is largely why she annoys the buhjeezus out of our 7 y/o beagle and senior yorkie when I take her back home to visit the family! They're not that interested in getting their ears pulled on by a young'n! haha |

| We also free feed our dogs. When we got the puppies, they also wanted the same food the other dogs ate instead of their puppy food. We tried 3 different puppy foods and finally ended up switching all the dogs to an all life stages food so they could all eat the same food. It worked out well for us. We used Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and brown rice formula during that time. Now one of the foods we use is Fromm 4-Star Nutritionals, which is also an all life stages food. But we have not used this for puppies. All our dogs are adults now (2 yrs old and older).

| What I've found is that the puppy doesn't really want adult food--they just want to eat whatever the older dog is eating. And often the older dog wants to eat the puppy's food too. They're just CONVINCED the other dog is getting something better. Mine all get Taste of the Wild and are still like that. |

| I think you're right about the dogs thinking the other one has something better. It could be the same thing but they would have to have it anyway.
