Yorkie Talker | Allergice skin and can't seem to get any remedy Hi, I have tried so many different meds, my baby has had cortizone shots, all kind of shampoos, nothing is helping. I have him on a new grain free food recently. He has huge flakes, dry crusty itchy skin, pretty much all over his body. He has always been under a vets care and they just say he has allergies. I just ordered something call K9Klearup but havn't received yet. Is anyone dealing with anything like this with their yorkie? |

| You bet...lots of us. Make sure you are treating your dog and home for fleas. For your home use a flea preventative that has insect growth inhibitor in it...so fleas just can't survive there. Feed your dog a simple diet such as a dog food with one novel protein and one Carb. Natural Balance Limited Ingredient has a good line. I have tried so many antihistamines. but none work when its bad. The only thing I have found that works is Atopica...you can get the generic for it on petmeds.com. Your dog may or may not have a food allergy. But if your dog is pretty itchy year round...he/she probably does. Perhaps in addition to seasonal allergies. Good luck.....its frustrating and scarey because you're afraid for your dog and afraid you won't be able to help it. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Atopica was the only thing that controlled my Cali's allergies. She had all the tests, medicine's and food switches and nothing worked until she went on the Atopica. I hope you can get some relief for your baby.

Yorkie Talker | Thanks. He was on atopica for a good while, but it didn't seem help a lot. However, it has gotten even worse since he has been off it. Maybe need get him back on it. It was always so hard to get that hard pill down him. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | The vet put Gabby on Cyclosporin yesterday. I'm sure hoping it helps hers. Cant use cortizone because of her cataracts.

| Good advice. Also, it can take weeks for any improvement due to food change to become evident. Has your baby's skin been scraped and tested (looked at under a microscope)? It kind of sounds like yeast with the flaking. Also, I've heard good things about Neutrogena T-gel shampoo in itchy, flaky pets. Ask the vet first though. Good luck, I hope your pup is feeling better soon

Yorkie Talker | I may have to get the atopica and try again. He is on flea/heartworm combo pill, but my house has not been treated for fleas. He is now every other day on tamiril-p, but not really helping. He also barks now at night just constant almost. Not sure what that is about. |

| For mild allergic reactions, we used baby shampoo here to just remove the allergens and we really like Neem shampoo to calm the skin after. I haven't tried the one listed above by others but I think we might give it a try now too!

| My parents's Yorkie female, Penny, who I grew up with had severe skin issues. She is 10 years old now and you would never know she had trouble with her skin. She would itch and lick constantly. Her skin was dry, red and swollen. It would keep her up at night. The first solution we tried that gave us good results was adding a probiotic powder to her food. The product claimed that dogs without the proper balance of flora in their gut can have coat issues. It worked pretty well, but it wasn't a perfect solution. We have drastically improved the quality of her diet. This has been a major key in her improvement. Remove wheat and corn from your dogs diet. Rice and quinoa are okay. My parents are currently making her food out of cooked quinoa (cooked with a vitamin, an egg, etc), raw BUBBA burger, and B.A.R.F. (Bones And Raw Food). It may take a month or two for you to see some improvement, but stick to it. By six months you will see many improvements in her coat, energy, and temperament. The third thing is the shampoo you use. Oddly enough, I also have very sensitive skin and skin allergies. I struggled for years with the same symptoms as Penny on my scalp. I finally found that mainly the lauryl sulfate and lauryl sulfite (and some other ingredients) found in most shampoos were the culprit. Many people, even those who do not have symptoms from using normal shampoo, experience amazing results after switching to a shampoo that does not contain these ingredients. Now I use Wen Cleansing Conditioner on myself and all of our family's dogs. It is expensive. But, it is the only product that I use. I no longer use hair sprays, gels, mousses, etc. I also save money on pain pills, allergy pills, cortizone, and dermatology visits. The same cost benefits will apply to your puppy. Wen has drastically changed my life and Penny's. Now I have gorgeous hair that everyone compliments. Penny also receives compliments all the time. She loves hearing people say "You're so pretty!" and she knows what it means. Now she only itches if she needs a bath or if she's been rolling around outside in something gross (especially during allergy season). Her old symptoms have never returned. Wen is safe to use on children, dogs, and adults. The creator of the cleansing conditioner, Chaz Dean, uses it on his Labradors. I have found the best results using the Tea Tree Cleansing Conditioner so that is the formula I recommend. Here are links to Wen and B.A.R.F.
