Senior Yorkie Talker | Veggies for dogs? I've always thought that dogs were not supposed to have any kind of vegetables. When I got Gabby on Monday, the previous owner gave me a dog food bag to show me what the vet recommended. It has sweet potatoes in it. I went ahead and bought some but I've really been wondering about it. I think it was my aunt-in-law who worked at an animal hospital that told me that they shouldn't have veggies.

| Veggies are fine. I think they can be over-done, but they're not going to harm a dog. All commercial dog food that I know of has veggies in it (even the pre-made raw). And w/ kibble, there has to be some sort of "binder" to form the kibble. I.e. potato, tapicoa, corn, etc. Some say potato is no better than any grains. It just depends on your preference.

| I agree, veggies are fine. The only caution I would give is when feeding fresh veggies. My older boy tolerates everything, but my younger one is prone to painful gas when given certain veggies and fruits, even the smallest bits. Both of my boys enjoy and do well with a tiny bit of sweet potato every once in awhile and baby sweets peas. They don't tolerate green beans well, but many Yorkies are fine with them.

| my lil guys love to have their "veggie snacks." one of their favorite treats are baby carrots. they also like celery, cucumbers, peas and green beans. Of course I make sure they only get small amounts since they are just lil guys.

| Veggies are very good for them. My suggestion is to just give one type at a time, for about four or five days each to see if there are any allergies.

| I agree, veggies and fruits are good for dogs. Mine do not particularly care for fruits but like veggies. Hot Rod cannot get enough of them. There are some that they cannot have. Just make certain that you familiarize yourself with what is good and not. I've copied the link from the sticky in this forum so you can see what is potentially dangerous. If you should have any questions, always be sure to ask your vet. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oods-dogs.html As for cooked or raw, it depends. I feel better giving cooked carrots so they are so hard but at the same time if I cut them up into coins or thin sticks, I will give it to them--I choose not give them a big chunk because I'm afraid they might get too big a piece and choke on it.. Mine love zucchini either way, it's really a matter of preference.
