| Food confusion I have seen so much talk about food. Teddie is my first dog. I was told that moist food gives him the runs. He came with a bag of Purina One smartblend Chicken and rice Formula. I saw that people here don't like purina. Is there a food I can buy at the supermarket that is ok? My finances are tight but want to make sure he has a quality food. |

| Price-wise, take a look at Fromm Gold or Classic line. MrChewy sells a 33lb bag for $35 or something like that of the Fromm Classic. Great company! Also, Nutrisource or Precise are something to look into. I think Canidae isn't terribly expensive and they just moved to their own facility (from Diamond).

| What kind of stores do you available near you? I can't think of a food from a supermarket that I'd feed my dog but there are many good choices at bigbox pet stores like Petsmart and Petco and even better choices at small independent pet shops for a good price. |

| From Petsmart, my top pick is Blue Buffalo. Toki was on a couple different kinds...she ate the chicken and oatmeal for puppies and the grain-free Wilderness for puppies (she's currently eating from Fromm's grain-free line). My sister's picky yorkie has done very well on the Salmon Wilderness and the Small Breed Wilderness. My parents' beagle back home is on the BB Weight Control chicken and brown rice. All of our dogs have done well...soft, shiny coats and good stools. BB can be too rich and not agree with some dogs but this has not been my experience. I'm sure others have suggestions too! It might be worth looking online for other dog foods too...you can find some pretty good deals! |

| Purina is the owner of waggin train dog jerky that is making dogs very sick and killing many and they wont pull it so its still making dogs sick and killing them. I would say there is not a good food you can buy at the grocery store. From petsmart I would say Blue Buffalo would be the best that is what I am using.

But as stated above, BB is a very rich food and doesn't work for all pets. When changing foods especially from a cheap quality such a Purina, make sure to transition slowly as to not upset their stomach. | |

| Yep yep. You don't have to use these specific brands that we've suggested, but when you look at the ingredients list, you don't want to see corn, wheat, or soy (I prefer not at all but definitely not as the primary ingredient...they are fillers and a potential source of allergies). You want some type of meat as the first couple of ingredients like deboned chicken or chicken meal (the "meal" should have the type of animal specified, not just a generic mystery "meat meal"). My personal preference is to stay away from Chinese products as much as possible. It's hard to tell just by looking at the labels so you have to contact the companies yourself although many members here have already done that which is helpful. I also prefer smaller companies. For whatever reason in my mind, I feel like they will be more thorough with quality control or at least not have their products produced in 20 million different plants/facilities. Those are just basic things I look at and the reason I'm currently feeding Fromm. Last edited by tokipoki; 07-04-2012 at 03:08 AM. |

| It is very sad but most of the "popular" commercial brands of food are made of poor quality ingredients. Their protein sources consist of slaughter house remnants along with a lot of grain. A better quality food is usually more concentrated and the dogs needs to eat much less of it to get the needed nutrients. You will save money in the long run by feeding a better quality food. I live pretty far from a large city but we do have good pet food retailers within a reasonable driving distance. Sometimes you have to do a search to find them. The health problems that develop later in a dog's life from eating these cheap foods are things that you do not want to encounter later on. |

| We have used Blue Buffalo Basics. It is the turkey one and says for sensitive tummies. Petco carries it so I bet Petsmart would too. If you look on their site they have coupons sometimes.

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hi, Hope all is going well with your baby! I have a male yorkie & his name is Jaxson(Jax). We've had him almost 2 weeks now & just took him to the vet yesterday to get shots, microchipped & physical. They told me he is 3lbs & he is very healthy! I asked about the food because at first Jax wasn't eating nothing at all almost so finally we tried Caesars (wet food) & he loves it! The vet said that they recommend it especially if it's the only thing I can get him to eat just try to mix in some dry (Purina) to sustain him longer. I've read all kinds of things about all kinds of dog food & people all have opinions on what's the "best" They have had massive recalls on Iams, Pedigree, Kibbles & Bits! I have heard lots of good things though about the ones above & am going to give them a try when Jaxson gets older & is less picky! It's hard when you are new at this & you just want to do everything possible within your means! Good luck & not trying to offend anyone about the pet brands above just saying they have recalls on all brands & you just have to research & talk to your vet! I'm just glad Jax is eating finally & gaining weight! Good Luck! |
