| Found a flea..now what? Newbie We found a flea!!! I'm a new pet owner so I have no idea what to do. I've started washing everything he uses to sleep and lounge on. I finally agreed to let Marley sleep in our bed too, so I will be washing all our bedding too. He takes a heartworm pill (Sentinel) that is supposed to make the fleas sterile, so do I really need to fumigate the house? He just had a regular bath 2 days ago, do I need to give him a flea bath? Should I just put a flea collar on him (which he doesn't wear) and walk him hoping the remaining fleas jump off during the walk? This is one of the main reasons I didn't want a dog, so I'm freaking out a bit. I know how hard they are to get rid of. For the future, should he also be wearing a flea collar? |

| We had a flea problem once - when we stayed at a dog-friendly hotel. It isn't hard to deal with if you catch it right away! Sentinel helps with the fleas not being able to reproduce, but I couldn't just leave them to let their life cycle run its' course! So uncomfortable for your baby. I am sure that members in your area can suggest products that you can use - we are in Canada so I'm not sure if you have access to the same products. Washing in hot water is excellent but you will need to ensure that your baby is treated. Some folks prefer organic products while others don't, it's your call. Good Luck! |

| I found a flea on each of my boys once, and they were on Sentinel too. I called the vet and he gave me Comfortis for them (a pill) that killed the 2 or 3 fleas within 2 hours. That was our only flea issue, I never saw any after that. I didn't have to do anything to the house since the Sentinel does make it so they can't reproduce. |

| The vet prescribed comfortis and said that we didn't need to fumigate but just vacuum well and wash all bedding. After about 30 minutes I started searching for them again on his belly and started finding them. Even after 30 minutes, they were starting to die and were moving very slow. I can't believe I pulled off 6! I'm sure there were more. Poor thing. Vet said comfortis will last 30 days so if I miss any with a vacuum, he will still be protected. Thanks guys! |

| Comfortis is a great monthly preventive!! Another thing you can do is buy a Capstar pill from your vet. A capstar will kill fleas quickly but doesn't prevent eggs from hatching, etc...If you see fleas, I would use a Capstar and a Comfortis this time. Capstar is actually safe enough it can be given every day although I would not give it daily. Go ahead and wash your linens and whatever else your little one has laid on, vacuum, etc... Good luck! PS: Flea collars generally don't work well. A flea has to actually come in contact with the collar to die.

| The regular DAWN dish soap is fantastic for bathing if you see fleas...it starts killing them on contact. Just keep it out of their eyes, start at the head and work your way back...make sure you rinse well. You'll be amazed at how quickly it kills them! We took in a little stray a year or so ago that had fleas...hundreds of them...so, of course, he was a nice guest and shared. I bathed everyone in DAWN and they each got a Capstar pill...no more fleas. That's the only time we've ever had fleas...thank goodness! |

My furkids Donating Member | Sadie has had 1 flea...Lillie 2....I use a holistic flea concoction..15-20 drops of peppermint oil to 1 cup of water...put in spray bottle, spray onto paper towel and wipe all over the animal ...this repels fleas...I also read lemongrass oil does the same thing but also repels ticks as well...you could put drops of the oil on their harness and that will help as well....only draw back, where is all natural, is it has to be applied every couple of days..but, I feel it's better than putting chemicals on our babies.
