Should we change food? When we brought Jaeger home at 10 weeks, he had a full coat, but was scratching constantly. We switched him over to Authority Lamb and Rice and he seemed better after that. Within the last month or two, I've noticed the scratching again (though not as bad.) He also licks his legs (the furry part, and also the insides of his back thighs.) About a month ago, his belly turned kind of scaly grey and pinky sized dried skin pieces fell peeled off. He also has fairly severe red tear stains/eye boogers. His fur is also coming out, but no bald patches. He looks super scruffy right now, but I THINK the fur loss is just that he is getting losing his puppy coat. He's 6 months old, half yorkie/half daschund. I will preface all replies by saying that he is NOT miserable or in any other distress besides the mild/moderate itching. We DO have a vet appointment tomorrow (it's a military post vet so the waiting list is a bit long-they advised if his situation turned acute, to call back and they'd suggest an off-post vet, but it's more chronic than acute.) I was hesitant to change his food at first because of all the recalls. We will definitely be weighing the opinion of the vet, but does anyone have any suggestions? If we do have to switch food, any suggestions on a reasonably priced food? Thanks for your help.

Your vet will hopefully be able to help figure out what is going on. I hope you don't have to go down the food change road. After finding one they like I always hate switching. best to your Jaeger!

| Well, I am one that changes my dogs' food often, so if it were me I would try a different food. There are plenty of good foods on the market. Several brands also offer their foods in different formulas so you can rotate within their lines of foods. It may be trial and error though, depending on how sensitive your dog is. You're doing the right thing by going to the vet too.

I don't think it's an outdoor allergy because he was indoors except going potty for 2 weeks when he was neutered, and he was still itchy. I don't want to just keep switching his food because he seems to have a pretty sensitive stomach. He'll eat anything, but if the food is too rich (like the hotdogs the trainer recommended for training) he'll throw it up. We'll be at the vet in less than 2 hours....Hope she knows what she is talking about.

Although they say Lamb is a hypoallergenic food, there are actually a Lot of pups on here that are sensitive to it... including Riley. Riley has environmental allergies as well as allergies off and on.... He also just recently had a reaction to the grains in FROMM chicken a la veg and pork & applesauce. He does really well on ACANA, which is grain free... although two of the formulas have Lamb so I now have to stay away from them. Here is a link I posted on ACANA that has a video... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-petfoods.html Here is a link to a thread i posted about Riley's Allergies: [Has Lots Of Good Info.!!] http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...allergies.html Hope the vet can shed some light..... Please keep Us Posted!!!!

Vet didn't see any signs of infection or mange. She said his skin was super dry and only a little pink and that it could be food allergies but lamb was a fairly safe food to be on. She suggested a moisturizing shampoo and a coat conditioner. We are using petsmart puppy shampoo and a psycho oatmeal spray conditioner right now. When she found out I was already spreading him down daily, she gave us fish oil to administer daily and wants to see us in a month. she mentioned maybe trying an antihistamine if that didn't work. If she does, I'm going to suggest a food achange. Allergy pills just mask symptoms.
