| How often do you take your Yorkie to the vet? My Oscar is 6 years old and hasn't been to the vet in a few years. Oscar is very healthy, only eats dry Nutro food, and I brush his teeth at least once a week. He gets at least 2 walks around the block a day and his breathing is fine. The only reason why my family hasn't taken Oscar to the vet is because of our current money issues. Another reason is because Oscar's old vet left the clinic we went to and we were not satisfied at all with the replacement vet. For years, we've been finding new vets to go to but just haven't made the initiative. I just wanted to ask you guys if this is ok and what you think about this?

| I think dogs should go to the vet at least once a year for a wellness exam and lab work. I would take Oscar when you are able to, even if he seems happy and healthy for good preventative care.

| Tibbe has tests, exam every 6 mos. for wellness plus anytime he's not acting right he sees the vet. Vet needs to look at your baby if it's been that long, run some tests & see about current titers or shots. How do you get heartworm preventative refills without vet ok?

| The very minimum should be once a year for bloodwork. An office visit averages around $40 here, and bloodwork about $110. For an entire year, that is not a lot if you put money into a savings monthly just for vetting. What would you do if there was an emergency or accident? I also have Care Credit just in case anything happens. I applied for it when I had ok credit, and they gave me a $3500 limit. when my credit went bad, all my other cards canceled me, but CC didn't, thank god. I keep it just in case, and for peace of mind. That said, Uni goes at least a few times a year for heartworm rx fill up, nail trims, yearly exam bloodwork, and the occasional thing that pops up. Now that I think of it, when was the last time I went to the dentist?!

| I think once over 6 years old, definitely should be seen once a year. I think every other year is probably fine for a younger healthy dog. Jackson is 3 1/2 and has been every year, mostly because of his age. As a pup, he went in 3x for the normal pup shots, then at one year for those boosters. At two and three, he went in a few times for other things, so got wellness exams in the process. But even at 3 1/2, he will be getting yearly bloodwork and checkups for my peace of mind. He has not been yet this year, in 2012 and will be 4 in October. I plan on getting him in after summer.

| My first Yorkie that I got way back when I didn't know better, once had blood dripping from his muzzle when I woke one morning & I rushed him to the vet. He was 6 1/2 years old then & the vet told me he had an abscessed tooth! It, plus some other decayed teeth had to come out! My poor baby had been in terrible pain & I had no idea! He'd been acting normally, eating normally & sleeping well. But since dogs often don't show any reaction to pain - I didn't know. He had to have dental surgery & closure of the abscess hole! It was eye opening! I learned then that Yorkie are subject to bad dental disease & have to have their teeth brushed, regular vet check to see if there is tartar/plague build up and/or gum disease & only a vet is experienced enough to do this. So take your little one to the vet now before you have to really spend a lot of money. How are you checking him for worms? Heartworm? There are just so many reasons you need to see a vet at least yearly.

Really, even if your york seems fine, preventative care is a lot less costly than emergency care.

| We go once per year, but there are also some "in between" trips for concerns or any out of the ordinary issues.

| Chacha is going once a month right now for an injection for her joints. She is experiencing a stage 4 luxating patella . We can't afford the surgery right now (just closed on a new house) so the shots are to keep the inflammation down and to keep her from developing arthritis and/or joint issues. Take care of your babies as they are a member of the family. My husband and I both need dental work but Chacha comes first. |

While, our shot schedule is every three years, we go once per year for bloodtest and physical exam & stool check. Of course, we'd also go at any other time(s) it was necessary if ZoE had any problems/issues throughout the year.

| I myself haven't had a checkup in a couple of years..but the babies go once a year for their annual exam and in between as necessary. This past year they have been at least 3 times each for things that have come up in between their annual exams. My vet requires annual blood work after they are 5 but before that it is optional except for heartworm testing. I wouldn't feel comfortable skipping any annual blood work.

| Georgie is almost 7 and goes once a year for a wellness check and blood work. He also goes for his vaccines which we do 1 at a time because of his size.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | We go once a year as well. Taycie will actually go in a month. I always do Bloodwork, Physical Exam and a Fecal. And of course if the need arises we go immediately.
