| Egg Shell Ingestion - Help Please..Ugh Ok so Miss Mia is 7mos old. I was making potato salad, went in the other room for three minutes and discovered that my leggy pooch reached in to the garbage can and grabbed all 3 of the eggshells I just peeled from my eggs...she ran like the dickens and is now standing in front of the garbage begging for more...I mean really shes acting like its sirloin...anyway, I know their loaded with calcium but is it SAFE for her to eat them? I've got a call in to the vet (who is in surgery) but I'm a little nervous, do I need to be

| Grinding the shells to a powder is good for them, but eating them like she did could cause some problems since they don't digest. They could cut her intestines or rectum. I'd call the Vet. to see what you should do.

| I googled it and came up with different answers, some say they are bad for dogs because they are not digestible and can cause problems, and the other half say they are not bad for them... I would just talk to your Vet when he is available. Did she really eat 3 eggshells? Whole?

| Some vets recommend just feeding something soft to try and oat the harp stuff, but not sure how much good that does when everything is mixed up in the stomach. And for things like bones when obstruction and intestinal damage is a concern, they will have you give small meals every four hours to move it through. Best to get your vet's recommendation for this.

| Ohh Great!!! I caught Deuce throwing around an egg shell in the yard yesterday. The cat next door must have gotten it first. So no wonder he had diarrhea.

| Bottom line is vet told me to check her tummy for hardness every couple hours...if it gets hard or bloated that could indicate a blockage or other problem, if she vomits, if she gets lethargic etc., bring her in immediately. Which is what I would do anyway. No sense in doing xrays cuz we know what she ate. She said that because I don't know if she gobbled or chewed that I must keep an eye on her for atleast 48hrs to monitor ANY changes. Once shes had normal bowel movements, eating etc. for 48 hrs we can "let our guard down." She did say to add some wet food to her regular kibble and pumpkin! Looks like I'm taking her to work with me tomorrow and not getting much sleep... I feel like such a crappy mom

| NOT a crappy mom!!!! We try to run interception defense for everything we can possibly think could even remotely happen....and we ALL, one day, sooner or later, get out-foxed by these tiny adorable creatures! So this Miss Mia, who has probable NEVER shown any interest in that garbage can, suddenly waited until mom left the room, and she took a peek inside the can, standing way up high, on her tippy toes...stretching, looking, rrreeeeeaaaaacccchhhhiiinnngggggg just as far as she possibly could reach, and grabbed the closest thing she could reach with her outstretched tongue......an egg shell. Now, she was thinking she would be doing her teeth some real good by eating those abrasive shells.....so she was actually HELPING you out, in her mind!!!! Egg shells are hard toswallow, unless you chew them up really well....I bet she will be just fine! |
