| At My Wits' End For months (about 7, ever since I moved back home) my pup's appetite just isn't the same. I blame my mom bc she gives her human food all the time and I think that's turned her against dog food I feel like I've tried everything. I've switched her kibble about four times, I've tried adding wet food to her kibble, I've added fruit to it, I've added vegetables, she will eat everything but the kibble. This is for all of the different kibbles I've tried (Blue Buffalo most recently). Then I switched her over to raw food (Instinct) and she loved it..for about 2 days. Now she's back to not eating it and I feel like I am just throwing money away since obviously if she doesn't eat it quickly then I have to throw it out. The ONLY thing she will eat is the crap food my mom gives her dogs (Beneful). I do not want her on this food but I don't know what to do. I've BEGGED my mom not to give her this food but I work nights and she always gives it to her anyway bc she claims the pup is hungry and won't eat anything else. Be that as it may, I don't want her eating Beneful! It really bothers me so much that she won't eat the quality food I give her, but she will eat the bad dog food. I've tried not feeding her all day so she will be hungry when I feed her...she STILL won't eat anything but the Beneful. What else can I possibly do to make her eat her food? I am so frustrated! |

| As long as you live there i say it is not gonna get any better, i am sure your mom thinks there is nothing wrong with the food..my sister has fed her poodles this for years and i have to admit that they all seem very healthy...and there is no changing her mind on it either

| Yeah, that's what I think also about it not changing as long as we are living here. Unfortunately, I can't afford to move out right now. Thanks for trying to make me feel better! I hope she doesn't develop any issues due to the lack of nutrition. |

| I have seen lots of dogs on that, and just looking at them, they are fine! My cousin feeds hers that, even the wet kind in the little containers, not the kibble, and they are fine! Dont stress your self out over this, and it isnt worth disrupting your relationship with your momma...she isnt doing it to be mean, she loves the baby and hates to see her "hungre"....and isnt that what mommas always do??!!! Just go with it...your baby will be fine....if you see it has a bad effect on your baby...poor, dull coat, sllergic reactions, etc, then you can use that as supporting data not to continue giving that food...otherwise, she will be fine! |

| I swear there is doggy crack in Beneful - Jackson is always attracted to that stuff and if there's one food I find absolutely disgusting it's Beneful.... even the nasty artificial coloring stuff to it! But yeah any time Jackson is at a house where it's available, he is like obsessed. He ate it one night and got so disgustingly bloated, and then was throwing up (and this is a dog who can eat almost any dog food and be fine). I do know they coat it with something to make it tasty, and have heard once dogs eat it, it's hard to get them to eat anything else. I feel like it's almost like how a kid would wanna eat McDonald's every day if they had a choice. Is there any way you could slyly buy a big bag of dog food for ALL of the dogs... that way you can be like "oh mom I bought all of this dog food, for all the dogs" and that way they all begin eating it? I deal with this sometimes, as I live at my dads a few nights a week while in school, and my stepmom will often just go to the grocery store and buy a food. So I end up buying a big bag of something Jackson does well on, and then she will feed that food, since it's there and it was "free" for her, ya know?? Also, she always buys those milkbone nuggets, which I think are fine in moderation, but a lot of calories and my dad tends to hand out treats. So I have to make it easy for him... I label a bag "Jackson's Treats" and get Zuke's or something tiny, so that way my dad can feel like he's giving him a lot but he's really giving him probably the same amount of calories one milkbone nugget would be, LOL...

| Would your mom be willing to change her dogs food to what you want if you are the one paying the food bill? It is worth a try. I can never get mine when they are pups to eat puppy food once they discover the adult dog food/bowl. My poor Golden was forced to eat his food out of tiny Yorkies bowls because the puppies kept going into his bowl at feeding time. I gave up when they were 6 months old since his food was an All Stages anyway. When I got Buddy he was forever stealing the Yorkies food and they were always stealing his food. They all eat the exact same food and still steal from each other.

| I have to agree with Brit, Beneful is a horrible food. You've gotten some good suggestions here on how to work around it with your mom, i'm hoping it works. If you don't feel comfortable feeding this food then it would be best to switch, as her owner you should feel confident and have peace of mind in what she's eating. Does your mom mind in switching her dogs food? is she willing to try others? maybe you can show her that this food is not so good by breaking down the ingredients to her. Show her that there are healthier options that you're willing to pay for and maybe she will come around. Here is a vet who is discussing bad dog foods, at the 8:17 mark she picks up a bag of Beneful The Quality of Pet Food Ingredients (Part 2 of 2) - YouTube |

| Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to buy a big bag for all of the dogs and hopefully that will work. The sooner I get the Beneful out of the house, the better! I agree, Britster, there's some form of puppy crack in it ha. It just looks gross, I wish they didn't like it so much. Thanks for the link, candigirl, I am going to have my mom watch it. Maybe she will finally believe me when I say that food is crap. |

Now I feed him FreshPet DeliFresh refrigerated food - the kind in a roll. He LOVES it! He also loves the DogNation Beef Treats. So I cut one of those in little pieces & mix it with the DeliFresh Chicken for lunch. I tried to mix some kibble in it a few times, but he spit out the kibble. Instead, I give him a Greenie every night. He also loves those little rawhide rolls - he loves the curly twisty ones even more though PetFresh also makes a dried sweet potato treat that I give him to chew on. You should def give it a try. Good luck!
