| First time worries with feeding raw.. I know this may seem silly but after researching the benefits of raw and seeing my baby suffer from allergies we decided to try a prepared raw salmon diet. We ran out of the patties (left them out too long) and Sophie's stools were looking pretty good so we gave her a skinless chicken drumstick and a little bit of liver. I watched her rip the meat off and I held it for her when she thought it would be more fun to wander around the house with it in her mouth, but then I heard the crunching and there she was chewing on just the bone. I know this she is supposed to eat the bone but after she got through half of it I took it away from her because I started to get worried. Now my anxiety is bad on a normal day and even with all of the research I did about it being ok to eat the bones and normal to feel odd at first, I am still petrified that something is going to get stuck or hurt her. She is fine and even playing around and chewing on a beef ear. I think I am just having first time worries. I have spent my entire life hearing that bones are bad for her and then being me, I just googled yorkies eating drumsticks and the stories were not the most reassuring. I took it away from her when I thought she may try to swallow it and I heard the crunching when she was eating it. I am hoping someone can just reassure me that this is normal and she will most likely be fine. I took a picture just before she got to the bone. For some reason, the drumstick looks really small, but I think it was the angle I took the picture. In actuality it was at least the length of her leg. |

One thing that concerned me regarding your post was feeding liver. Please do not feed liver until your dog is fully transitioned on other proteins first and has no issues. Liver is very, very rich and can cause loose stools. In my case, it took 9 months before I could feed liver or kidney without issues. Wait a good month before adding liver and start with the tiniest sliver first. Lastly, I taught my dog to eat on a hand towel in the kitchen. If he started to take something off the hand towel, I would just pick it up and place it back on the towel. He learned very quickly. So now, my only clean up is a weekly washing of the hand towel that he uses for his place mat. Being worried is completely normal. I was exactly the same way. It took me about 2 weeks to get over it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feed raw, but I only use the pre-made like Primal or NV etcetera. There are quite a few people here who feed Prey Model and they love it...so hopefully they'll chime in. If giving bones feels too scary, I wouldn't give them...it wouldn't be worth it if you're not comfortable. I give my babies NON-consumable raw bones to chew, but I no longer ever give consumables. This is pretty much the opposite of what PMR feeders suggest. After experiencing some very scary choking incidents, I chose to no longer feed RMBs (raw meaty bones). I now get bison back bones from Whole Foods, cut to the size I like - and they're not consumable. They work wonders on their teeth though!

| I would be worried about what germs are being spread around by having raw meat on the floor and her getting raw meat juices in her beard and then on everything her beard touches.........

After I posted this I decided that we are going to go back to premade raw. I know people still think it isn't the greatest, but maybe after awhile I will try this again. I haven't slept all night watching her and the little princess has been snoring away all night and now she is playing with one of our cats. I should have mentioned in the original post that yes, the bone is on the floor and not on a plate or mat or anything. There is a large dinner plate off to the side. She is just hard to get a picture off, so when she took it off of the plate my husband told her to drop it and I took a picture. She definitely didn't eat it on the carpet! It was her first time, she is still learning -she has been eating the raw patties and they stay in the bowl when she eats them. The concern with her beard...if you are concerned, she was due for a bath anyway and her face and paws were washed thoroughly. We tried to done the prey model and I don't think I can handle it. She loved it, but I definitely don't think I am ready for it...so back to patties we go! | |

| I feed raw chicken bones all of the time! I can reassure you that she should have no problems. Now you do have to watch if she tends to be a gulper then if she has gnawed it down to just one of the knots on the end of a chicken bone and it makes you nervous, by all means take it away especially if she is new to it too. But I give all of mine either chicken legs or tight every other day and they do fine. I do smash some of them with a meat tenderizer just to break it up but that's mostly for my small yorkie or for puppies. And yes, my puppies eat the bones too. The only thing I will tell you is that her stool might be whitish tomorrow. Chicken legs have a high percentage of bone. Remember you are supposed to shoot for 80%meat 10%bone 10% organ and I think chicken legs have almost 30%bone. What I do is feed meat only one day and then a meat meal in the morning and a meat and chicken/thigh leg at night and that seems to work pretty well. Chewing the bones is awesome for cleaning their teeth so just think about what a good job they are doing cleaning up their teeth when you hear those bones crunching! Chicken feet are great too and might make you feel a little more comfortable. They are also a great source of glucosamine! |

Our Wylie is a super aggressive chewer, and he can't get anything off of the Bison bones except the meat. They're awesome for scraping their teeth bc they gnaw at them for a good while after the meat is gone. I love those Bison bones for my kiddos.

Hmm, may have to check this out. Gizmo loves his antlers, but I think he'd go nuts for the bison ribs. Spoiled!

| I know you've decided to switch back to premade raw, but if/when you do decide to try prey model again the nervousness of the bones crunching will become music to your ears. Raw chicken bones are soft and our babies can digest them just fine. Lexie's breath is always fresh and her teeth are pearly white, i don't brush them anymore and don't need to because of that lovely crunching. |
