Yeast-does this make sense to anyone? Tomorrow is the vet visit for yearly shots an a check-up. I have been reading a lot here on he Forum about yeast. As usual, Latte's itching and scooting are quite minor in comparison with others I've read about. However, I do think there's something about the yeast...I am going to ask for a cytology for it, and an examination of her "personals". There seems to be a sticky, brown substance in her vaginal area, that doesn't seem to be urine. I wonder if this is a yeast discharge of some kind? I am also not happy with the RC HP food-she likes it, but I still observe itching and scooting and paw chewing, even with the new round of cortisone. The yeast shampoo is on it's way, but I really feel I need to know for certain if she has yeasty skin-she doesn't smell, but...I feel it can't hurt to check. These issues have been going on for years (She's almost 10). I am still uncertain about VARL allergy testing. If it comes out inconclusive, I'm out the $$ with no real answers. I would love to be feeding her a meat based diet of some kind. It seems to me that soy and brewers rice could be adding to the yeast problem. Does this make any sense? I go to the vet tomorrow.

I have suspected that she has yeast as it is common with dogs who suffer from allergies. I would start with a food switch to something grain free & maybe something with whitefish & ask your vet about diet for her. I am betting you will see a huge diff in her itching after you bath her with the Ketochlor shampoo. Yeast can be in her eyes , ears, nose, mouth & YES in her PP. When I took my Gracie out of the shelter she had green oozing stuff coming outta her little PP & her eyes that had burned the hair off her face & it was yeast. Yeast can be green, brownish yellow or white or no color at all. The problem is that it is also internal & the shampoo will only kill what's on the outside for a little while but at least it will make her much more comfortable. Also it's best to shampoo her with a good shampoo before you use the Ketochlor as it's not really for cleaning but mostly for killing the yeast. The problem will continue till you find out what she is allergic to & remove it from her diet or surroundings. Probiotics can also help.

Also continued use of Prednisone drugs can cause yeast so your kinda fighting a loosing battle here. I would Not waste money on yeast testing, put that money towards allergy testing. You will know if it's yeast after the 1st bath in the Ketochlor when her itching is minimal to gone.

Hmmm That is an excellent point, Lillimae. I will consider that. Funny thing is, my husband hardly notices any scooting or scratching during the day. The minute I come home, she scoots! Now, she also knows we're going for a walk and she probably has to poo, which she does. Sometimes she scoots right after eating. The shampoo should be here any day!!

Perceptive! I like your thinking! So does my DH. Back to your previous comment...I think I would like a definitive diagnosis on the yeast first. One less thing to guess about. And it's not expensive. I did a lot of reading tonight about food allergy testing, but the VARL would eliminate the guesswork on the food trials. I will probably make my decision at the last minute--The thing with Latte is...her allergies--whatever it is---is not as bad as some I've seen. It's more frustrating than anything. I am dying to try the shampoo-I wish it would get here! Maybe by the end of the week.

That's just crazy about an RX for the shampoo as I have never used a vet that didn't always have it in stock. Maybe you can call another vet to see if they carry it & ask your vet to call for approval so you can get some sooner. You can still get the other as you will need it anyway. I know V-vill is out there but your not in BedRock for pete sakes. Last edited by lillymae; 05-01-2012 at 08:23 PM.
