Yorkie Yakker | flea preventive Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone had a suggestions on some different kind of flea preventive. I really don't like using topical because my male Yorkie always seems to lick it . My babies are mostly inside dogs except when we go camping and when they sit out on screened in porch. Does anyone have any ideas for me ? Thanks |

| i actually got a natural recipe it is 2 cups of water in a squirt bottle mix 20 drops of each lavender, citronella, and rosemary (all 100 % essential oils) and that is used as a spray on topical all natural you need to spray them each time the go out. you can also use it on yourself as well. i got my essentials online from puritan pride got a free bottle each and they shipped within a day.

| I love using essential oils, but I won't use them directly on my animals even in a mixture or shampoo. I use Frontline Plus, I have not had a problem with it, and we live in a heavy tick area and I have yet to pull a tick off of any of my dogs. I have also never had a single flea. I use it every 3 months except during the summer months when I use it monthly. The dogs cannot reach their shoulder blades to lick it off.

| I wanted to add one more comment about essential oils as tick repellants. If I were going to use essential oils for this purpose, I would not use the ones in that mixture. Annie Berthold-Bond is the queen of green and she has a recipe for tick repellant on the internet that uses rose geranium and nut or vegetable oil. She is the one I'd defer to on this topic. Here's a post I found http://grist.org/article/bertholdbond-author/full/

| I used to use a topical for Mine but My Mitsi kept licking it and it only worked for a week, plus it irritated Her Skin. My Vet convinced Me to try confortis, which is a pill and it has not given Her any sideeffects, and is very impressive, it really keeps the little pests at bay, it lasts for a full month too! |

| Y'all who say your dogs are licking it are you putting it between the shoulder blades? I didn't think they could reach it there.

Yorkie Yakker | Thanks everyone for your suggestions I will look on that site Cathy.I have also tried frontline plus on my dog that's what I usually use every month but like I said my little man does lick it off I don't know how but he does. So the last 2 months I haven't been using anything at all. Just dawn dish soap if I happen to see a flea on them . Plus Edward has really senstive skin and it doesn't help . I havent tried the pills for fleas yet but i have a hard time giving thwm dewormer in a pill both my dogs like to throw it up even if given with a treat. I have to use liquid now . |
