| Limping-Dont know whats wrong MY baby started limping ..We watched it for few days and then decided OK hes not getting better..I took him to emergency vet on the weekend who shaved his leg thinking he might have a sticker in his paw from walking or a toenail problem. His thought was maybe he punctured it on something and was getting a infection...No ex-rays were taken as we can pull, bend, touch etc and he doesn't cry or yelp...He was given an antibiotic pill and an inflammatory pill. I came home kind of upset that the doctor didn't really know what was wrong. OK now its been a week and hes so withdrawn and his little foot (front paw) is bent under and hes not using it. I actually carried him out to the potty this morning and he just laid there I was told his meds would make him really thirsty, really hungry and he would have to urinate a lot. Now mind you, this dog is always at my side or he cries...Today, I said I'm going for a ride.....no response...I said lets have some breakfast ( I hand feed him) and he came to me ever so slowly and faced the wrong direction??? I turned him around and he ate about 4 bites of food. He is totally shining me....So I called another doctor for a second opinion and now here I am...They basically don't know whats wrong with him(( She said , she thought the meds were making him weird and to stop taking them, let him rest and next week we would do xrays if he was not any better (This has been going on for 2 weeks) Although, they have to tranquilize him for the xrays which has me completely freaked out(( I just have visions of him stopping breathing or his heart stops or God knows what...This IS my baby after all!!!! And though no one feels any breaks, she will do them ( I think to make me feel better) Then we will go from there like a full blood work up looking for a tumor...god forbid...I am completely devastated and so frustrated that I cant make him feel better and fix this problem nor can either doctor...Does this sound familiar to anyone...I am at my wits end....and my brain is so tired from worry......I just hate seeing him like this(((((((Ideas anyone??? |

| Poor guy! Just a thought... did they run a lymes test? It's a fairly simple cheap test. Jackson came up limping randomly one day, and after x-rays proved nothing wrong, we got a positive lymes test, which affects joints, etc. He was better after a few days of pain meds and about 3 weeks of antibiotics. Also, I don't know why they'd need to put him under for x-rays. Most don't. Jackson just went back and was back within 10 minutes or less. Sounds like you need a new vet IMO.

| Medication is not working...2 vets and no one has done an xray. You need to advocate for your baby and tell them what you want done. If you don't want him to be sedated for xrays ask them to try without it, honestly I think you need to find a reputable vet in your area, even an orthopaedic specialist at this point. This could be an infection, neurological, or a skeletal defect, there is no way of knowing based on what you are describing. I am however, concerned. A 3rd opinnion is not unreasonable at this point, there is something wrong with your baby and you gotta do what you gotta do.

| He needs xrays...sooner rather than later. There is no reason for him to be sedated for an xray of his leg and foot.

| I would head straight to an Orthopedic Dr. if this were my baby. I also can't believe no one has taken an x-ray. I had a pup who acted just the way your pup is & the vet could feel nothing so he took an x-ray & she had a broken foot. Please take your baby to a different vet & insist on x-rays.I would want the neck & shoulder in those x-rays too. Last edited by lillymae; 02-24-2012 at 08:56 PM. |

| I don't know what happened but I find it extremely difficult to believe that two vets did not offer to do xrays or any other diagnostics. You said that you called the second vet. Just wondering if she actually saw and examined your pup.

| My Peyton had a light sedation for x rays and was just fine with it. I definitely think you need a new vet and definitely need x rays. And I would do this RIGHT away.

| I don't know where you live but here when a doctor cannot figure out what is wrong they refer you to a specialist. Your dog is obviously in pain and needs proper diagnosis and treatment You should insist that your vet refer you to an orthopedic doctor. Some sedation for an X ray is no big deal. |

| LadyJane, Yes he saw the new doctor yesterday..The reason we chose her is because his eye doctor (vet optho) recommended them..They spent quite a bit of time examining him (much more than the first Dr.) And would have done the xray then but he was panting so hard and nervous..She said he had to be completely still for digital xrays.....She was going to send me home with a tranquilizer pill that I could give him in the morning and bring him back more calm...Or she could just give him a tranquilizer shot there...But I would have to leave him as he needs to be "woke up" afterwards...which kind of freaked me out.....She did say lets get all the medicine out of his system and see if his personality gets back to normal first.....Im just waiting for him to wake up today and see if he looks any better... |

| The first thing I want when my dog is limping after they examine her is xrays. Obviously it hurts and the problem really needs to be found out now rather then waiting and waiting and finding out it is something that got worse because you waited.

Hopefully, if he is still limping you can get it done and again, hopefully, know what is wrong. Good luck!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Okay I'm assuming that all digits and elbows were palpated, no pain on palpation, no obvious asymmetries in shape between elbows of right and left legs. No obvious raising of the shoulder tips either side? I agree with other posters full sedation is not necessary usually in Yorkies for Xrays. Actually that vet is / was not saying full sedation but a tranquillizer. And yes they need to get their feet under them again, prior to being released to your care. And for ideas of course I have some, but any ideas need to be confirmed by ortho vet with appropriate imaging, be that Xray, or MRI, or US etc. No. 1. Hairline fracture of any of the digits of his paw, or any of the tarsal bones of his foot. Or a very very small sliver of wood, glass or some other foreign object has imbedded itself into any of the pads of that paw. No. 2. Ligamentous injury to any of the above No. 3. Elbows - Elbow dysplasia - or Ligamentous injury to elbows - and or muscular strain No. 4. Shoulder injury ipsolateral side of lifted paw. No. 5 Nerve injury to the upper cervicothoracic spine. I hope that you are at the vet's now, and will update us on any diagnostic findings.
