| Senior food advice So my little girl is now 8+ years old and I believe it is time to start shifting her over to senior food. She is currently on Innova for small dogs, and she can chew it no prob. Still has good teeth. Any advice on which kibbles would be best for a very healthy, active 8 year old girl would be appreciated! She has no medical issues and as the vet said at last visit, "she is healthy and VERY lean!" lol Thanks folks! Only the best will do for this girl so high end food suggestions are welcome. She is 3.3lbs and not overweight. Just perfect for her size. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! I switched my guy over to senior food when he turned 10 years old. Big mistake. He started to get real lazy and lethargic... so I changed back to an adult food, and he perked up. I'm thinking Yorkies are kind of highstrung and may need the 'extra' nutrients. So if you do switch, keep an eye on her....

| i don't really believe in the "senior" foods. if she's doing really well on the current food that she's on, then keep her on it! don't fix it if it isn't broken right? then again if you're really concerned about it, maybe try switching her to an all life stages food. |

| Thanks for the advice! She definitely is doing well on this food, zero health problems and has lots of energy for a dog her age. I will leave her on it for sure. I definitely don't want to jinx the good fortune I have been having with her. |

| I would keep her on the food she's been doing well on. I see no reason to change it. I also am not a big believer in the "senior" foods. I believe Innova is considered good for all life stages anyway. It sounds like you girl is very healthy and doing very well. Keep doing what works.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I just had this discussion with my vet too when I took Harry boy 8 to be neutered, I feed natures Variety , Harry is very healthy and lean, and he told me NO , no need to change his food, NV is a good all stages food and Harry is been doing very well on it for years, so no need so far to change food. so if your girl is doing well on her food I would not change it without a good talk to the vet, I had a whole blood panel done on Harry before his surgery, and my vet based a lot of his decision on the results and Harry's overall health.. hugs, Carmen |

| thi Some of the senior foods have additives for bone and connective tissue health. Basically they fight against arthritis. Your dog does not have apparent degenerative changes so you surely don't need that at this point. If the time ever came for that sort of thing you could easily get food supplements to treat symptoms. |

| I would choose to put a yorkie on a senior food probably at about 9 or 10 at most. It would be based on the fact that some disease processes occur in dogs, esp older ones, that do not show up on lab work. It is very possible that many yorkies on YT have kidneys that are starting to become inefficient with perfect labs. It's my preference to lower protein as a precaution. I suppose if one thinks kidney disease calls for high protein, then they wouldn't choose to do this. I would probably also lower fat. So yes, I would feed a quality senior food in the near future.
