Yorkie Yakker | best dental chews My 4 year old yorkie, Dolly, will not chew the Greenies or any of the harder dental chews. I try brushing her teeth every night but she fights me so much, I'm sure its not too beneficial. I feed her the Freshpet Select food which is soft and needs refrigeration. I truly think this food is a better choice for her health but am concerned about her teeth. She refuses dry food. Does anyone have a suggestion on good dental treats for a 4 lb. yorkie that she might like? Also, should I just put her on the dry food only? |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I believe it is a myth that dry food causes less dental disease than wet foods. Brushing is best to keep the teeth clean. For dental chews, I have started using CET chews that I buy at my vet's office. The chews have made a remarkable difference. If you choose to use them, please supervise your pup closely. A couple of members here had pups who had near-fatal choking episodes with them. I buy the medium size and I hold them while my boys chew.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Keep trying different (and safe) chews, bc she suddenly just might like something. Like Maximo, I like the CET chews (there are 2-3 diff types now). I also give Dingos bc Wylie does fine w/ rawhide, and the 2 little ones can't consume the dingos...they just chew them. I also give raw bones (non-consumable ones). I used to use Bully sticks and always liked those for chews, except the smell of some of them just got to me.

| We exclusively use Nylabones. Ellie does well with the Flexies. She can't really get anything off, yet they are soft enough for her teeth. Rylee gets the Durables. I don't really like them. I think they are too hard. But he gets too much off the Flexies. The amount he gets off the Durables, for his size, doesn't really concern me. We can't have any animal based chews around because of Ellie. I don't like them anyway. I think there is much less bacterial risk with the Nylas. Ellie used to be able to get pieces off of rawhide, so that kind of thing doesn't work for us.

| We use bully sticks, CET chews, and on occasion Himalayan Chews - but very rarely. He doesn't seem to like them much. So he's only interested if he gets them as a special prize once every few months. He also gets Get Naked chews every other night or so, the small ones, not sure how much they even clean teeth though - if any at all. He usually gets a CET chew once a week or so and one 6" bully stick every week.

Yorkie Yakker | chewies Thanks to all of you who answered my question! I will ask my vet about the CET chews and just keep brushing her teeth. I'm so glad to have found this site and people who know and care about yorkies! Thank you all again. |

| As far as dental treats go, I give Zuke's Z-Bonz and Blue Buffalo's Dental Bones. I'm not sure how much they actually do if anything but she really likes them. I also apply Petzlife Oral Care Gel to her teeth every other night and the nights I don't apply the gel I brush her teeth. I've never really been sure what toothpaste is best but I read a lot about the CET toothpaste on this forum so I plan on using that type next to see how it does. She also gets Primal raw in the morning and I swear it helps her teeth out as well. |
