| Do I really need heartworm preventative? I am supposed to start this soon, but I am dumb at this dog stuff. Do I really need heartworm preventative. If so, what brand do I use or type? Where can I get it cheap? Will it cause my dog any harm? And whatever else you think you can let me know! Thanks! MuffinsMom |

| I also use Heartguard (Heartgard?) from the Vet... I never thought of NOT giving during winter months (no mosquitos)... would save us a bundle!

| I have lost a dog to heartworms, and it is heart breaking to watch them go thru it. I strongly suggest prevention. Rocky is on Sentinel that I get from the vet. Both of my mom's dogs have been on it for years and have had no problems with it. Being from Texas my self, depending on were you live the mosquitos are year round (for example the Gulf Coast Area). |

| Ha, mosquitos are alive and well here in 70-degree weather of Charleston, SC! LOL. Must be nice not to have to spend all the dough on flea and heartworm meds - more for Christmas presents! Oh well, I love this weather though and so does Sully....flea and heartworm free!

| Being in Texas I would give heartguard year-around. I am in Alabama and I do. We have the occasional warm weather and what happens???? The insects come out!!!! It isn't worth the risk to me. It cost less than $5.00 a month for protection, so why wouldn't you???? Muffin's Mom how old is your babe???? You may have to have a blood test now to begin the treatment !!!

| Absolutely - if you're in the south, you need heartworm and flea prevention year-round. In other parts of the country, you might can skip it in the winter months, but, MuffinsMom, you definitely do need it!!! If in doubt which months you need it for, consult your vet. |

| I totally agree with giving heartworm and flea prevention year around if you live the in South, it does not get cold enough to kill off the mosquitos or any bugs for that matter. Anyways, I much rather spend the a little money to prevent, than a whole lot money to fight the heartworms. |
