| Purina Puppy Chow and Mighty Dog??? Hello All, I asked a breeder what she gives her puppies to eat (I am preparing for a homecoming for my new Yorkie baby ). I want to ensure that he is slowly weened off of his current diet as I plan to feed him (or first try out) Natural Balance. I was SHOCKED when she told me that she was feeding the puppies Puppy Chow and Mighty Dog! Mind you, I am a novice when it comes to diet, but the thought of Mighty Dog makes me want to vomit. I love YT for many reasons, but mainly for the support and honesty that you all give. Once again, my question is am I over reacting?

| I think they're both pretty gross too. JMO. I am sure some dogs could eat them and be okay but I wouldn't feed them. A lot of breeders just either don't know any better, or get breeder discounts, etc.

| My breeder fed her dogs and puppies bil jac but I switched my dog's food to merrick . You can gradually change your puppy's diet. I think maybe they feed those brands because it's cheaper when feeding a lot of animals. |

| Cozy was feed Ol'Roy when I got her because she was "picky eater". I immediately put her on Proplan small breed and she ate it up. No GI problems with the sudden diet change. I think puppy chow and mighty dog are better than that.

| Teddy ate Purina for the first 8 months of his life and was perfectly healthy, with super shiny coat and bright eyes. Our Airedale ate Purina all of her long life and was gorgeous. It isn't the worst thing in the world.

| my first reaction to your post was OMG, what kind of crap is this poor dog being fed... in all honestly, if the pup is doing well on Purina and Mighty Dog, then what's the diff? When I was growing up, our dogs ate Gravy Train and table scraps and all survived to ripe old ages. Smokey started out life on people food, and was the picture of health when we got him. Horrifiede at this, I switched him over to a high quality minimum ingredient kibble and cowtow to his Epicurious and finnniky nature regarding 'wet' enhansers. I'm thinking I should have maybe left well enough alone.

| You are absolutely right about the old days... We never ate processed food and there wasnt even a salt shaker on our table. So much for 'progress'.

| Merrick is considered a decent food based on dog food ratings but it gave my dog bad gas. I tried solid gold, blue buffalo and halo she hated all of them. I am back with innova although some folks blast because of the P&G connection. Its had to know what are decent foods today but I know anything with by-products and corn are bad for pets. |

| When we brought Molly home she was being fed Purina Puppy Chow and Mighty Dog too. I weaned her off both in about a month. She now eats Science Diet Small Bites. I know alot of you here don't like Science Diet either. My son's dog (Sheltie) lived to be 15 and it is all we have ever used. |
