Default Much Worse Than Puppy Breath !...

Hey,
I have a quick question about my 7 month old boys breath.
It's bad....!!!
Note: He never used to have puppy breath. But now....

I recently switched his diet to some cooked and raw food, mixed in with his Royal Canin kibble (I blend to a mush: boiled chicken, egg, raw carrots, spinach, a little olive oil).

He is also losing teeth, and I've heard some mention that it might be the dried up blood from that - but I've been trying to brush his teeth almost every day and it hasn't helped. (well, of course the toothpaste is chicken flavored...haha)

I really don't mind it!! I just want to know what it could be, because if it's something more serious, internally, I want to get it checked out.

Really bad breath isn't normal. I would have a vet take a look at him.

Sorry... it could be anything along the alimentary canal or affected by it. It will take a vet to tell you exactly what is causing it.

Default puppy breath

He might have an infection in his teeth/gums. The little one we rescued had TERRIBLE breath..I mean really, really bad. Took him to the vet and he said he had an infection, gave us some antibiotic and it really made a difference! Good luck!!

Relax, it's teething and happens at this age. As soon as they lose all their baby teeth and the adult teeth come in, it stops. Most Yorkies don't lose all the baby teeth on their own, and most of us get the remaining ones pulled during a spay or neuter. During this period they sometimes have a double row of teeth and food gets locks in the crevices, and that mixed in with the blood of the lost tooth, leaves a rank smelling mouth. Glad you are getting him use the the toothbrush!

I'd be careful about making my own diet, a balanced human diet isn't the same as a balanced canine diet. While those are all good foods you are using, it may not be balanced. Sounds like it doesn't have as much calcium as he needs.

Definitely RELAX. Oz went through this when he was losing puppy teeth also. His breath was AWFUL. But as soon as he lost his last tooth it went back to normal. No vet visit required IMO. Oz lost all his teeth naturally, which I'm thankful for.

You're right, why am I complaining on this site?...haha
If I'm really not sure I should take the issue to a vet right?!

Anyway Brawta is getting castrated on the 13th (another topic completely...*sigh*) (he is here next to me and as soon as I wrote that he started whimpering! how weird is that?...) So I'll specifically mention it, because when I went last month (counseling for the castration) the docs were both wearing masks and didn't think to go smelling in his mouth.
But he's not acting sick otherwise, so I'm almost sure I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

Thanks for all your messages back - it's nice knowing other people have experienced the same things and can give their advice!!

Some vets who haven't treated lots of Yorkies don't know that they don't lose all their baby teeth on their own. A good time to get those teeth pulled would be during neutering, they have to put them out to pull the teeth so you might as well do it when they are already under.

Princess recently had a baby tooth pulled, her last one, and her breath is a million times better. Before the tooth must have went bad her breath really never had a smell at all so I'd have the vet check to see if there's a bad adult tooth or left over baby teeth.

Lola had bad breath one time and wasn't eating well for a couple days so I took her to the vet and she had a small cut on her tounge (I swear I looked, but it was far back and I missed it), so while it might just be because of the teething, it is something else to think about. GOOD Luck!

my Lola has very VERY stinky breath too. She is on Royal Canin and I have recently noticed that she has what looks to be an extra baby tooth that didn't fall out on its own. I'm guessing thats the culprit!

How old were your pups when you got them spayed/neutered? Lola just turned 9mo and i'm wondering if now would be a good time. A couple months back, my vet suggested waiting a little longer than normal because of her weight -- shes just about 2lbs.

Wow, she's very tiny isn't she? It probably is the tooth and she might even have a couple of more. Yorkies rarely lose all the milk teeth on their own, and most of them have a few pulled when neutering. I would talk to my vet about this and be sure your vet is use to spaying small animals. A blood test a day before the surgery is also a must.

I took my Miss Mini to the vet just a couple days ago for this same reason. Turned out she has acid reflux. She did not act sick but the smell was horrendous.

When I got to the vet and she started asking questions etc., I was able to see that I missed more than 1 symptom of this.

So as you can see there are many possibilties; but, remember bad breath is usually a symptom of something....I would have the vet check it out to be sure.

Miss Mini had baby teeth at the time of her spaying as well, they removed them during the surgery, and I recall that a couple of them were in bad shape. (funny the things you remember when reading some of these posts!)

Nancy 1999 is sooo right about talking to your vet re: experience with small dogs...very important question to ask.

Thank you Nancy and Lynzy!!
I have made an appointment for us to visit the vet this week to get to the bottom of this.

Funny, I had never thought of acid reflux as a possibility. What were the questions that your vet was asking? I'm curious to know. I'm glad to hear that Miss Mini is on her way to being better, and of course having minty fresh breath!

Poor Mini, now that she has minty fresh breath again, I can't stop kissing her!

She started walking me through the few days before that, literrally, what did mini eat that day, did you give her any treats, anything new, was she playing, what did she play with...they do this all the time when they can't figure it out. Literally ask me to go through each day! It works the way they do it!

Mini had woken me up the other morning dry heaving and then "spitting up" bile and a little clear fluid I said "but thats nothing unusual cause she's been doing that for a couple years and then shes fine, but thats not it cuz the bad breath started before" how is it now? she asked. "I said its much better than what its been" then she asked if she had been sleeping well, and I said "yes but shes been snoring alot, its so funny I even made a video on my phone of it" I showed it to her, and what I thought was snoring she pointed out was all in her throat, and what I thought was "dreaming" legs jerking etc., was discomfort from the irritated throat she had from the acid reflux etc., the "spitting up" bile was acid reflux.

She looked in her throat (wow that was a task for sure) you could easily see the irritation, then she explained to me why she thought it was acid reflux and she could do a scope but didn't think it necessary...but knowing me the way they do, I'd rather error on the side of caution, sure enough mini decided to burp and spitting up the fluids and sure enough that stuff reaked like minis breath...she said no need for a scope that is definitely "acid reflux" and now she is on sucralfate and Pepcid each day. I felt horrible because I should have figured this out sooner, the symptoms were there...

sorry so long, I'm just trying to explain how the vet works with me!
