| Prescription for Treats... Hi My yorkie Tinkerbell was prescribed Science Diet ZD due to allergies, she was previous on Natural Balance Duck and Potato but since she was not eating it after awhile and I feed my boxer ProPlan and she loves it, I began giving it to her....Big Mistake! Her vet said either put her back on Natural Balance Duck or I can prescribe her ZD, I chose NB but again she wouldn't touch it so I purchased Science Diet ZD and she absolutely loves it! My question is, since I cannot continue giving her the regular treats, do I also need a separate prescription for the treats? |

| Rosie is on an RX Science Diet. I do not use the treats made by them. Instead, I am very selective on what I give her. I use the Puptarts sold by Rachel, which are dehydrated fruits and veggies. I also have used the Chicken treats that Sugarmamma sells. I guess the question is, what is she allergic to? If there are allergies that prevent her from eating wholesome treats then I would guess you would need a script for the treats. I get Rosie's food from my vet. I would give my vet a call and find out.

| Your pup should only get Z/D treats. Your vet probably sells them. If not, it looks like Petfooddirect does, but an rx is required.

| How was she doing when on NB? What changed when you fed her ProPlan? How long was she on ProPlan? If *I* had a choice of not doing prescription vs. using an RX, I would choose not to, but that's just me. It doesn't sound like it's a necessary thing and since the vet gave you an option, I'd look into something else. NB has other flavors you could try if it's her being picky. But since she ate this well for a while, and then got picky, she will probably eat the ZD for a while and also get sick of it and wait for something new. I think there was a recipe posted somewhere where the ZD wet food could be baked in the oven and turned into treats.

She goes to the vet tomorrow for a follow up due to an eye ulcer. I would like to keep her on ZD for now since she is loving it but hopefully change her back to another non-rx food, if it's ok. | |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Taycie personally struggled with NB and she has food allergies. Her tearing was the worst and the skin around her eyes was incredibly red. As far as food goes, I had Taycie on RX Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato for about 8 weeks. Results were wonderful and I was really thinking we had our answer. Then, her allergy symptoms started to creep in... And, her stomach was becoming tight and bloated after eating. Went to the vet, and they decided to switch her food to the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic and Science Diet Z/D wet. My vet thinks she has not only allergies to food but possibly food intolerance as well. So far she is doing well and everything seems to be ok. Her symptoms subsided and her stomach is tolerating the best I ever seen. Knock on wood! I just want her to be comfortable that is the most important. When you have a dog with food intolerance's, allergies etc. RX foods are wonderful for it, because I don't know where Taycie would be without it. At this point she is past anything I could ever buy for her online or at Petco, and I am not educated enough to even mess with it. I think the biggest thing to remember with allergies is even the smallest trace amounts of something in food could potentially set their allergies off, this is why quality control in dog food companies is so important. What are NB QC standards??? Also, for Taycie because her stomach is so incredibly sensitive, I don't give treats anymore, it is not worth the reaction. I have baked the canned food, but I just use her kibble as treats.

I would avoid the Science Diet treats containing any of those ingredients.
