Yorkie Talker | 1yr. old losing hair Tucker is a little over a year old now and hes been losing his hair for a while but i thought it was normal with him being a puppy. but now im not sure if it is. he has little bumps on his bald spots that are a little raised up and he has stuff that looks like dandruff. But he seems to feel better after a bath. any idea on what it could be? and what i could do? |

| What food is he eating? What type of shampoo are you using? How much time does he spend outside? Has he ever had fleas? I know, a lot of questions. But it could be sooo many things. Have you done a skin scraping at the vet? It could be allergies (environmental or food), it could be a flea allergy, it could be mites, it could be a multitude of things. Has he been to the vet? Really that should be the #1 thing. No, it's not normal.

| It's probably a flea allergy. I rescued a Dachshund recently who was losing all of his back hair and had none on his tail from a flea allergy. They thought it was demodex mange but it turned out to be a flea allergy. He really needs to be taken to a vet or he will continue to suffer. Also, sometimes shampoo can make it worse, depending on what type you use. The Dachshund is being treated with medical shampoo. Is he on any flea preventative, e.g. Frontline, Advantage, etc?

| There are products that are cheaper but I won't recommend them, too dangerous (I see some at, like, Walmart, etc, that have bad reactions and reviews). Honestly, I am all for saving money where you can. I have taken Jackson to a local clinic for things like rabies vaccine, etc, where it's cheap and quick. But when it comes to an issue like you are having, we are off to the vet. I'm a college student, I barely get by most of the time, but I do manage to take care of my dogs needs. Just yesterday he had to be put under for a dental and surgery because I knew his tooth was bothering him and I did not want him to be in pain. I scrounged up $1300 of my own money to do it. Because it had to be done, it's what having a dog is all about. Most people wouldn't let their children suffer due to lack of funds. There are options out there, such as Care Credit, to help. In this case, I recommend a vet. It will probably be a pretty easy treatment and not too costly but it's something that has to be done. If it's a flea allergy, they will probably give you medicated shampoo to give him. There's really nothing that I or anyone on this forum can tell you to do because we are not professionals.

Brit, said it perfectly. It does sound like he is miserable and uncomfortable. I would finding a way to make a trip to the vet.

| I agree....sounds like your little on is really suffering. Imagine how it would be for you if you had to live with fleas and constant itching and now hair loss. Sounds really miserable. I don't mean to be harsh, but if you can't give him the care he needs, then maybe you should find someone who can?? It would break my heart if I had to give up my little ones, but if I could find no alternative then I would. It is what is best for THEM that matters. Please look into care credit or talk to a vet about payments, or beg family members or consider surrendering him to a rescue that can help him.

| A flea alergy is not something costly to treat and untreated it can lead to other problems. My chachi is very allergic to fleas and was being treated at the vet for them but anyway his amune system got so low that he ended up getting mange also. So please dont put off taking him to the vet to get this treated

| It's been twelve days since your original post and obviously he's still suffering and not seeing a vet. I am not sure what else you want us to tell you. There is no magic cure we can give you over the internet; only a vet will be able to help you! And it's probably something very simple and not too costly.

I don't see how anything can be more important than taking care of this. How would you like it if this were you? I guarantee you would have this taken care of it right away. Do what is right and quite making excuses. Your dog can't speak up for himself....so I'll say it for him.

| The equivalent for fleas on a dog is lice on a human. If you were infested with lice and itching miserably to the point that your hair was falling out, what would you do???? I'm just so upset that it has been this long and instead of taking him to the vet and getting him help you come here and complain about the good advice everyone gave you. Take care of your dog, or give him to someone who can. Loving your dog is not enough. You have to take care of him too.

| I am sure you care very much for pet and unfortunately fleas can be a big problem. My bichon has similar problems. I had to take her to the vet because all the vet fleas meds stopped working. Darn South Carolina fleas! My vet said my furgirl is allergic to fleas also. He gave her a steroid shot and now she is taking comfortis for fleas. The comfortis pill is working better than the other flea meds from the vet. My girl still has one bad looking bald leg that we call "chicken leg" but I think some hair is trying to grow back on finally. Please take your pet to your vet. You will actually spend less money. I tried shampoos and flea meds from the vet but nothing worked until she actually saw her vet. If that one "chicken leg" doesn't get some more hair soon, we'll going back to see what we give her to promote her hair growth. |
