| OraVet Dental Gel Anyone use it? Know anything about it? The dentist recommended it for Jackson yesterday to maintain and upkeep with his teeth. I took it off just because I was trying to save $$$ every little bit that I could to knock off the price tag of his surgery, lol. Plus I like to research a product a bit before just buying it. Anyone like this stuff? Is there any complaints about it? Any alcohol in it? I go back for his re-check in two weeks so I may purchase it then. In the mean time, she told me no brushing or anything for the next two weeks since his mouth may still be sore, as to not irritate it more.

| Btw, I should add I already own Petzlife gel and Prodent PlaqueOff (the stuff you sprinkle over their food) so that's another reason I was hesitant to buy another product. Also, is there a specific kind of toothpaste that may taste the best to them? I have this stuff from Petsmart -- don't know if they all would be about the same or what. But he acts like he can't stand it. I am going to get Jackson on a nightly routine now.... I'm going to try and take these two weeks that I can't actually brush his teeth to get him accustomed to a routine and do some de-sensitizing to the tooth brush even going near his mouth, without actually brushing. I think I'll do it before our last potty for the night, that way he can learn we brush, then he gets to go outside!

| Hi, Macy had her yearly check up yesterday and I saw the information on this product in her office. I'll be interested to know what you find out because I was thinking of getting this too. She is 2 and her teeth don't show any plaque buildup. Right now I brush her teeth religiously with Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpast. I think I got it at PetSmart. I asked the vet dentist what kind of toothpaste is the best and he said any kind of dog toothpaste is good. It's the act of brushing that gets rid of plaque, not the toothpaste. He said just to use regular dog toothpaste and be consistent. At first she didn't like the taste but now she tries to lick the tube when I am putting it on her toothbrush. I also bought a child's toothbrush from a dollar store that fits into her tiny mouth. I think I saw someone on here that uses an electric tooth brush on their Yorkie. I saw a disposable one at the dollar store I am thinking about going back and getting and trying on her.

| I've used it for four years. Wouldn't have a Yorkie without using it. No alcohol. It is like a wax that binds to the teeth and creates a plaque barrier. It does work. I've heard a couple problems with it on YT - one that the dog hated it and one that it didn't do much good. Haven't experienced either. You apply it once a week, but the original app is done under anesthesia when the teeth can be dried off completely. So it's too late. But then, I started Ry on it without him being under (vet agreed that at the very worst it just won't do any good this way - not going to hurt). Ellie had very severe periodontal disease. A very nasty mouth... She has some minimal tartar accumulation, but hasn't had a cleaning in about 4 years. For a dog with such severe mouth issues (and a Yorkie at that), it is pretty much a miracle. This and brushing is pretty much all we do. The veterinary dentists tend to recommend it. Jackson's dentist would really be the very best source for figuring out what products to use on his teeth and what products not to use on his teeth (along with chews). It's their life. They know best.

Oh, shoot. I wonder if they were trying to get me to buy it ahead of time then so that they could have applied it when he was under? I wish they would have explained that a bit more to me. Oh well. I probably should have just bought it. What's another $35 when I've already spent $1300? So it CAN be started when he's not under, though, right? Are you really supposed to "dry" the teeth as much as possible first, before every application? That seems like it'd be a pain in the butt. Sounds like it's helping Ellie out a lot. I'd love to be able to avoid another dental for the next 4 years +. His teeth are so sparkly clean now and I just want to maintain them, so looking to purchase products now, in two weeks we're getting down to business and brushing once daily. I'm looking for a product exactly for the purpose of prevention. I don't really think applying Petzlife is going to prevent much, to be honest. Maybe I'm wrong. I have probably half a bottle of the gel left. But the alcohol has always made me a bit uncomfortable, though I've never personally seen side effects. So right now I'm looking at purchasing: - a small tooth brush that he doesn't mind as much - yummy toothpaste (but may just keep using what I have) - OraVet Brushing daily, OraVet weekly, and Proden PlaqueOff daily in food. Does this sound like good preventative measure? I LOVED this facility. It an Animal Dental Center and you can only go there from referrals. The staff was great. I was greeted in a room with four different vets, all with different specialties. The main vet dentist was really great in explaining everything to me - showing me diagrams of the canine mouth, what it's supposed to look like, what's normal/not normal, etc. I learned quite a bit and was really fascinated by the canine mouth. She made an interesting point that a lot of small dogs seem to have a lot more issues with teeth because often the teeth themselves are similar in size to larger dogs, and for a mouth their size, you think they would have little fox-like teeth (I think that's how she put it) but often times there's simply not enough room in the little mouths for these too-big-for-their-mouth teeth. Btw, Jackson did not have his two teeth in the VERY back. She said he was born without them... which is not totally uncommon. But I learned a lot about my own dogs mouth that I would have never known. Can't believe the found a dead tooth in the front as well (I'm pretty certain I know what it was from too, now that she said it). Anyways... I really really loved this place and am glad I took him to a dental specialist. It was worth it for my peace of mind.

| Nope, you don't have to dry them every time - just for the first app. That's why it's done while they are under. Vet said word on the street is that you do need to do the first app when they are under for best results, but it's not going to hurt him to try it without doing that. Yes, that is why they were trying to get you to buy it then. Fifteen minutes after Jackson woke up from his dental, he had plaque on his teeth. A few hours after that it started to turn into tartar. So yes, brush everyday to try and stay ahead of the game. CET toothpaste. I haven't heard any veterinary reports about Proden - good or bad. I've read reports online about it working, but that really doesn't mean too much to me. My vet was just telling a client that was asking about dental gels and sprays that she has not seen anything come up in her magazines about any of it (I assume some are dental specific bc that's her special interest) which means they probably aren't all the companies (or owners) believe them to be... That's not to say that none of them work, but if they worked by themselves and consistently and were safe, more vets would be selling them. Maybe look at the Veterinary Oral Health Council website. They have a list of certified products that have been tested and do work. Above all though, you went to the best, take their advice. Jackson was lucky to get to go there. I'd be doing what they think is best.

| Callie is 4 and has very little to no tarter on her teeth. I brush them once a week, use oravet and she is a crazy bone chewer. I really like the CET tooth paste and you can buy it at amazon.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I have OraVet for Taycie, although, I will admit I am not super religious about it. I am not crazy about the application process.. I just never feel like I am getting it on her teeth very well... I was using the Petzlife but when Taycie's liver enzymes came back elevated a few months ago, I threw it out. Not sure if that is really what caused them to go up, or if it was just GI distress, but after speaking with my vet about it, she told me although she was not familiar with the product that it very well could have been because of the alcohol in it. At this point, I am running every little thing by her first... Taycie's GI system will let me know if I don't! For, dental care I love C.E.T toothpaste. I buy the Vanilla Mint. Brushing is what I am super crazy about. And, I mean CRAZY about it! I brush her teeth in the A.M. and P.M. And... I RARELY miss... I keep track of it by a calendar on my fridge that way I KNOW it gets done both times. So far, her teeth look fantastic, her vet comments on them every time we see her. But really all I do is brush! I am however interested in using HealthyMouth. I know my vet doesn't carry it but I am going to ask her about it. They have a water additive which, I am not a big believer in those.. just my preference really, but I am mostly interested in the gel... dog::essential | Healthy Mouth LLC | the healthy choice for your dog, cat, horse Looks rather good and it is recommended by Veterinary Oral Health Council. Only downside to me is the price... it's pricey..but, hey I am sure I have dropped a few grand this year so whats another 50???? LOL! I know someone on here uses it and loves it and it was recommended to her by her vet.. but my brain is lagging remembering who it was.... Might be something to check out. I think if my vet ok's it.. I am going to be trying it. I am glad Jackson is doing well and you were able to figure every thing out. Hugs and Kisses for him

| Thanks Emily! I will maybe print out a page about that HealthyMouth stuff too and get the dentists' opinions I just placed an order on EntirelyPets for: CET toothpaste (beef), CET mini toothbrush, CET chews (though I am not even sure he will like these), and Ora-Clens Dental Wipes (I had to add something to get up to $25 for free shipping, LOL, no idea if they will even work, but I figured it's worth a shot). Now... onto taking care of my own teeth I think a root canal is in order for me next. I got referred to an endodontist about a month ago.

| I've never heard of the OraVet, but I'm interested. I've been looking into trying some new preventative measures as Levi gets older. He's almost 4, and thankfully has not needed a dental yet. He just got his teeth checked last month and got a good checkup. I do brush his teeth pretty regularly (probably every other day). We use the finger toothbrush (kind of like this: Amazon.com: Petrodex Finger Toothbrush Dog and... ) and CET toothpaste (usually vanilla mint), and he does well with the tooth-brushing. He likes the taste of toothpaste, and he's gotten so used to the brushing that he doesn't fight it at all.

| Lol, thanks! I've had one before... had two cavities in my whole life, had them filled, and BOTH turned into root canals *sigh* It sucks! I'm really interested in this HealthyMouth gel. I, too, am not big on water additives. I always feel like they just won't work or something. Or he won't drink enough of it to even make a difference, etc. But I'm so glad you posted about it -- and that it's approved by the VOHC as well. It also looks like it's really easy to apply (which is important to me with fidgety Jackson, who does not particularly like me looking in his mouth). lol.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | WOW! The office looks fantastic! So glad you found it! I am too very interested in HealthyMouth gel. It looks really good! My thing with water additives is I just feel they need to be drinking fresh clean water with nothing else. I am also sure the minute I tried to add something to Taycie's water she wouldn't drink it.
