| Treats for dog w/MVD Roxi was diagnosed w/mild MVD in August. Once she was old enough for adult food, her surgeon said he would be OK putting her on regular adult food (but wanted to have liver workup done before changing diet and then after). I took Roxi in yesterday for a 6 mo. check with her regular vet. At the time of her MVD diagnosis, her BAT # was 34. Yesterday that # was 84!!! She's been on Royal Canin Hepatic food (l/d canned food) since August, so the only thing that she had been fed was Wellness treats. So we are going to keep her on the prescription food, but I am at a loss of what I can use for treats. Roxi's vet said we could used the canned food and bake it into treats, but I would like to hear what any of you use for your MVD dogs.

| Apple bits (peeled), green beans, and even sweet potato tend to be fine. Baking the L/D is a good idea. If this was diagnosed as MVD and a shunt was ruled out, I would not worry about the fluctuation, esp. if the enzymes are close to normal. Bile acids of MVD dogs may never normalize or they probably won't stay that way if they do. Diet can help (and possibly things like SAMe), but I wouldn't be alarmed if it goes up a bit.

I'm going to try the apple bits and baking the L/D. What is SAMe? Thanks for your reply.

| My dog daisy didn't do well on RC hepatic either and it raised her liver enzymes and threw her off badly. I'm using Purina HA with great results overall.

| I really need to research/talk to my vet. I know that there is no cure for MVD. I am assuming the goal is to keep her on a low protein diet to keep the liver numbers down? I guess I expected her #s to be normal once we changed the food. I didn't even realize the Royal Canin Heptatic might be a problem. The l/d kibble only comes in 20 lb bags and the kibble is bigger which is a problem for my little one. I'm going to try the apples today as her training treat. I am also going to research the Purina food. The good thing is that she has no symptoms of liver disease and at her 6 mo checkup, the vet says she is in excellent condition...skeletal, weight, skin, hair, etc. YAY!!
