Zodiac: Flea and Tick Shampoo Anyone have experience with this product? For the past month I'd noticed Tommy to be scratching and nipping at his back. it got to the point where he has sores. I figured he was doing this out of anxiety. My friend and her dog lived with us for a short time. Her dog (currently takes) has anxiety issues that cause her to nip and scratch her paws and belly. I assumed since she was gone, that Tommy was just picking up what he noticed from her. To keep him from doing so, I went and got him a cone collar about 2 weeks ago so that he can't reach back to scratch. Up until today, he was doing great! He wasn't scratching nearly as much and he couldn't reach back to bite himself. Anyway, during our walk today, I noticed small bugs crawling around where the sores used to be. They looked like fruit flies but w/o wings. I tried to grab with my fingers, to no avail. I feel like a bad Mom for not thoroughly checking him sooner. So I went to the pet store and got this brand of dog shampoo. I hope this stuff works!

| If your pup is scratching and biting enough to require an e-collar, then he should be at the vet. That's not normal and it's important to figure out what the problem is. Just because he can't reach back there to bite doesn't mean it's not driving him crazy.. Also, sores? Are they healed? This is all part of a skin issue that needs to be evaluated by a vet. If you are at all unsure about whether the sores are closed properly, then using any harsh shampoo could cause major issues. Besides that, flea shampoos are almost never recommended. They can be quite dangerous. I would not use Zodiac on my pups. Use a product that your vet sells (even if you don't buy it from them) like Frontline or Advantage, etc.

Thanks for the advice. I've already used the shampoo though. Washed away 7-8 fleas that I saw. I dried him very well, then rubbed some DE diatomaceous earth (I use it myself) into his coat. So far so good.

I have used that shampoo a couple of times in the past. I used to live in VA. and every time we went outside to the grass, Dora will bring back a Tick on her leg and Zodiac was one of the huuundred shampoos I got for her. Her vet did not recommend the use of it, because of the ingredients potentially harming her nervous system, something like that. Since then I have used it only one time 2 days ago. We move to TX and in 1 year she only had 1 Flea.

I would Not use anything Zodiac on my pets, Ever. Several yrs ago when I got my 1st Tech job, the 1st spring that I worked as a Tech we had one poisoning after another for about 2 months & they were all related to Zodiac flea products. I agree that if your baby has fleas & sores, you need to take your baby to a vet.Your vet will be able to give you something much safer to use on your pup & your home & yard.

Of course I haven't used it again since the first time I made this post Thanks everyone for the response. I will say, he isn't scratching nearly as often as before. A couple times, I rubbed DE (diatomaceous earth) into his coat. Sadly, during our walk this morning, I saw 2 small larvae crawling in his stool. I won't be able to go to the vet for another week - so in the meantime I'm going to be feeding him some DE as it's a natural de-wormer. Anyone have experience w/ that?
