| Vaccination Question When I picked up my pup from the breeder yesterday he told me not to give Lepto and to avoid corona. When I took my puppy to the vet she wanted to know the reason the breeder gave for me not wanting me to have Lepto and Corona. Are there any breeders out there or longtime owners who can give me the 411 on this? Thanks!

| Corona and Lepto are "non-core" vaccines. I think it really depends on where you live and what you feel the risk is. I will never give lepto again as my boy (who was bigger, 6lbs at 12 weeks) had a bad reaction to it. It's common in little dogs especially. I would say no to corona all together. The only non-core vaccine I give is bordatella because we are constantly around other dogs between pet stores, dog parks, and being a pet sitter, and he had kennel cough twice without vaccine. Since getting the vaccine both times, we've avoided KC. So I do choose to give that one. As for the rest, I take the minimalist approach. I really like Dr. Dodds vaccine protocol.

| Thank you Brit! The breeder didn't give me a reason so therefore I felt dumb when I didn't have answer for vet. If it's not necessary and may hurt my baby - then count me out!

| Corona is highly questionable. Pretty much useless in the end and it does cause reactions. I would personally never willingly give it again. The same would go for giardia, canine flu, and the dental vaccine (d/c'ed I think). Lepto, bordetella, and lyme are more of a case by case thing. They are all given at least once yearly, so that is a big reason why I prefer to skip them. Just not putting my dogs through it all the time. Not health IMO. One of my dogs does get and will continue to get lepto for now (the single, not the one in with DHP). We are at high risk and he is a piggy, so he licks everything up outside. I've chosen to get it for him even after my Yorkie reacted very seriously to it. For me, it is worth the small risk of reaction right now. A lot of breeders will tell owners to not let the vet give it. That is understandable since it is non-core, Yorkies are sensitive to it, etc. However, this is NOT a decision any breeder should be making for their buyers. Breeders aren't vets. Find a vet you trust and talk to them about it. Lepto is a very serious disease... Kennel cough is usually nothing more than a nasty cold. I don't get a cold shot for myself (lol), so I hesitate to give it to my dogs. Not giving it to them currently. Lyme - really dependent on area. I don't like the vaccine and would probably forgo it for my pups. Soo, obviously it's highly variable based on where you live, your pup's lifestyle, your vet's thinking, your desire to limit vaccines to prevent long and short term reaction or your desire to vaccinate for everything all the time just to avoid viruses and bacteria, etc.

My Lizzie had a serious reaction to it when she was way younger and I almost lost her. I also don't have Corona done either.
