| How much is too much PROTEIN? I have been feeding Lola with Orijen since she turned 13 months, ( she is now 18 months) when she was a puppy i was feeding her Innova and decided to change her food to Orijen after reading really good reviews from ppl here on this forum. I used to have so much trouble feeding her iNNOVA because she hated the taste and since i changed to Orijen i no longer have this problem with her. Last month I was looking for some toys at a local vet/pet shop here in NYC and the owner (not the doctor) started asking questions about lola's food, when i told him she was on orijen, he told me that that wasn't a good a food as it has a lot of protein and that i could cause her liver shunt! Since last month i have been wondering if Orijen really has too much protein (Crude protein (min.) 38.0 %) i don't wanna cause lola problems with her liver for not knowing or doing a little bit more research about dog kibbles. does anybody know if Orijen has too much protein? and if it does, what would be a better option with less protein?? lola is only 4,5 lbs and i am afraid that her liver is more sensitive or not as strong as the bigger yorkies Last edited by JosselleandLola; 09-23-2011 at 06:44 PM. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Protein and dog food is always a debated topic. I think you have to go with your gut and feed what you feel comfortable with. This is just my opinion but I never felt comfortable with it.. I don't know.. It was just how I felt. Usually, with higher protein percentages, higher fat content follows. The fat is what scared me the most. I just never felt comfortable feeding something with a high fat content to a breed that has pancreatic issues. However.. Their are many who feed it and like it. I also don't know of any research that suggests a higher protein diet will damage the kidneys. If your dog has certain pre- existing diseases with liver, pancreas, kidneys, then obviously higher protein is not recommended. Bottom line, My deciding factor came to was not what a read online. Yes, I am guilty and I used to just "follow" what I read. But my mind what opened when my Taycie needed and RX diet. For now it is working for us and I am happy with it. I do think really is a personal choice and what works for some, does not work for all.

| I, too, have been going back and forth over this issue. I have a bag of Orijen that I am taking back because of the protein content. I am feeding Lotus duck formula and Moses likes it better than TOTW. This dang dog drives me nuts! I picked up some samples of Natural balance today just because several on YT feed it. I have been mixing two kinds together to give him variety. I am interested to know what the consensus is.

I know of at least one prominent Yorkie show dog who eats food that is 40+% protein and does fine. However, it would not be my choice. I feel safer with more modest amounts. Make sure you have liver and kidney function tests done annually.

| I was wondering about protein being high in food too, I feed cj blue wilderness grain free, chicken, small bites, it is a new food a dog trainer in our town told me to put cj on this looked and it has 36 percent protein and 15 fat? Are these to high? His eyes have cleared up, not runny, and his snotty nose has cleared up. He weighed 3 pds 1 oz when we got him after 3 1/2 weeks now she weighs 3 pds 7 oz. But he was to thin vet said when we get him. His eyes are bright and his coat looks fabulous now. I also noticed my tootsie eats less and she has lost 1 oz. but her coat looks amazing too. Hmmm so hard to know? Maybe we will get great answers my vet could not be more delighted with changes.
