| Missing Teeth - 5 Year Old Yorkie Hi all, I have been absent from the Forum for a while as my little Kimmy has been happy and healthy. Last night while giving her a weekly bath/tooth brushing I went to brush her teeth and noticed she is missing 3 teeth. I don't know the proper terms but they are on the top. 1 "big" one and 2 or 3 little ones in the front. I held it together to finish her bath and didn't want to upset her. She is no pain whatsover - playing and eating just like normal. She gets regular dry food and a greenie a day and always chews her food (she takes a bunch in her mouth and carries it to wherever I am and chews it). I BBM'd my breeder immediately and she told me not to worry and that she would lose some teeth. I asked her if it was my fault and she said no not at all. I asked if I shoudl take her to the vet and she said her next appointment was fine. I was going to take her in any way to make sure there is no infection (just waiting for the vet office to open). At her last annual check up the vet actually praised me for the condition of her teeth. I asked about getting a proper cleaning and he told me I could wait and said I was doing a good job. I am so upset and worried. I feel terrible. It's her 5th birthday on Friday.

| When was her last appointment? If they are in perfect condition, then trauma is possible. Either way, the vet does need to look in there very soon. I disagree with the breeder. Small breed losing teeth may be common, but it is not normal.

| Her last appt was 8 months ago - and she is still in the same routine as before. I booked an appt for this week...I think maybe she feels it's common for her dogs? I have heard things about "bad breeding" being the cause. I'll keep everyone here updated after the appt and see what the vet says. Perhaps she ran into something but I am always with her so I don't know when it would have happened Ugh

| Yorkies just generally have terrible teeth. Breeder doesn't really matter. I mean, some will be fine, but a lot do get very diseased mouths. It probably is common for her dogs, but that just means she probably isn't getting dentals as needed (with no homecare, that is usually at least once yearly for Yorkies). People have told me it is normal too. It's not normal. It's just what is said to avoid vetting the dogs in most cases. A bunch of teeth shouldn't fall out. My Yorkie's teeth started falling out too, but she had periodontal disease. And this happened because her mouth wasn't properly cared for. Not saying that is what is going on in your case, but perhaps the breeder's..

| Thanks so much Ellie May - When I got Kimmy the breeder recommended putting her under every few years and getting her teeth scaled. When I was at the last vet appt I brought it up to the vet and asked when we should do it and he said they were okay for now and that I could wait! I completely agree with what you're saying...if she has any sort of disease I want to treat it immediately! THank you
