| Nature's variety instinct canned cat food for dogs So I was thinking of buying my Shih tzu oreo some nature's variety canned food and feeding him about 25% canned and 75% kibble. Considering his weight it comes down to a very small amout of canned a day. I was looking for the 5.5 oz can but couldn't find it anywhere. I called a local pet store and the woman working there told me I van feed my dog the canned cat food? I looked up the p and it was the same. I emailed nature's variety. I added their response. I thought others would like to know this if it wasn't already known. I checked the forums and didn't see any info on this. My email: I was told at a petstore I can feed instinct canned Cat food to my dog as it is the same formula. Is this true? I read the ingredients and it is the same. Also, can I freeze canned food for later use. Even the smallest can can last me over 3 days. I only fed 25% canned to my dog. Response: Thank you for e-mailing!* The Instinct Canned dog and cat food formulas are exactly the same. We formulated the Instinct Canned food for a cat's diet, so it would be sufficient for a dog as well. You can buy the*smaller cans of*cat food to feed your*dog if you would like.***All of our cans are fully cooked and they will stay fresh in the freezer for 2-3 weeks after opened.* Thanks for supporting our products! |

| Yup, you can sometimes feed cat food to a dog (under a vet's oversight). Just have to be careful because cat food is generally higher in fat and high fat foods can be dangerous to some dogs (esp. those prone to pancreatitis, and Yorkies are).

| So do you think it may be a bad idea to give my dog this food? They are healthy so far. |

| Then on a dry matter basis (water removed) it is 20% fat. Not terribly high for a canned food, so it's worth asking your vet if they think cat food is ok. If you wanted to be safe and keep fat content low, then 20% is a bit high. Almost never a reason to feed a food so high in fat. Also, because it's a cat food, only cats have gone through any testing when eating it and there aren't going to be reports of things going wrong when dogs eat it because dogs don't eat it. So I do think there are much better choices out there for the average Yorkie. However, if you like the food and the brand, then I'd ask how they feel about feeding cat food.
