| OCD Problem Ok I have had Allie 5 months now. Here lately she really has an Obsession Compulsive Disorder to always wanting to be outside looking in trees for those damn squirrels. It's to the point that she is refusing to eat anything now because she want's to sit at the door looking for those dang thing's. Allie hasn't eaten since yesterday morning. She is drinking water. So far she hasn't thrown up from not eating, you know how they get by throwing up bile when the tummy is empty. I guess I'm going to have to find something to put across the bottom of the patio door that is the height above her head so she can't see out. If she doesn't eat by tomorrow morning I'm taking her to the Vet to be checked out and have blood work done just to make sure we aren't dealing with a problem. Has anyone here had this kind of problem with an Obsession like this?

| Hi~ my Max is sort of like that; if he knows there's a squirrel around, he'll sit in front of the door for HOURS staring and standing at attention. I've never had him not eat b/c of it though...

| Hmp, what is it with Yorkies and OCD?? It must be in their DNA! If she is that obsessed about it, I wouldn't let her watch out of the door. I would start training her to stay away from it. Esp if she isn't eating over it. Peanut has a lot of different quirks, He has a fav toy its a little bone 4" long and it is just stuffed, no squeaker. Well this bone is his BABY. He will go bury it, but he will bury it walk away and then go back and get it and bury it again, He will do this over and over until he "finds" the right spot. Also when he is in between spots he will pace around the house and the look on his face is priceless. He looks so stressed out. It funny, but at the same time I worry about him because it doesn't seem normal...?? He is also deathly scared of the energy drink Monster the big can. One time we went for a drive and we stopped at the liquor store, DH bought one and came in the car, when he opened it it made that pop sound, OMG Pnut ran in the back of the trunk ( we have a corvette so its like the back area) and went all the way to the back and started shaking in the corner! Now everytimr Pnut sees the can he starts shaking! He is also scared of fingers, if you flick your finger at him. Another one is when a water bottle cracks on its own, he will run and hide!! DH says it is my fault that he has all these quirks and anxiety, he says I baby him My advice would be to try to snap her out of it and train her not to do that, you might be creating a little Pnut!!

| If she's not ill, she probably is feeling insecure/stressed somehow or under challenged, which stresses some dogs. I've heard OCD can come from either of those and who knows what else. Block her ability to stare out the glass, lure her away with a training program of 5-10 minutes, a game of ball or tugowar, a high-value treat and each time she breaks away, lots of love, praise and treat. If you don't break the OCD pretty early, it's far harder to do and she may start to sit there and drool, go in circles, whine. Watch her ears when she is looking out the glass and have a training session which is that every time they go up and she focuses, instantly distract her away, into another room and give her a very high-value treat or take her out front for a quick walk. Repeat - let her go back to the glass, watch the ears and respond the same all over. Repeat it about 5 times each training session. It will break her intense concentration and soon when she sees the squirrel stimulus, she will expect not to be able to focus on it due to the expected distraction coming and look to you for it expectantly. Anything and several different things to keep her distracted for a while until she loses the OCD tendency and can just treat squirrel watching like another fun activity. That has worked with any dog I have had with an OCD tendency.

| I know all about training dog's and I don't need to "snap" her out of it. She was a rescue we adopted in April. This is door they come and go out to go potty, so I can't block her from that. She also goes to the door when she has to go potty. I have solved the issue with putting a barrier up to where she can't see out. As for the eating she is eating now. Her blood work at the vet yesterday was all fine and she is healthy. She just loves to watch squirrels. Sorry I asked the question.

I had someone message me and it wasn't all that nice. I didn't reply. I had never seen the screen name before.

If her health checked out ok and she is eating then I would let her watch the squirrels. Like I said Pnut has a lot of quirks and OCD and as long as he isn't in any harm I let him be!

| Oh, gosh, sorry that happened to you! Why do people have to be so rude! I know I was just trying to help as you seemed to ask for it. It gets sometimes I won't respond for fear of angering someone and that is never my intent. When someone asks for ideas, I will give them out of trying to help the dog having trouble and not trying to upset the owner.

| I am sorry someone said or did something that upset you. My feelings have been hurt before and I have gotten angry, at the way some one worded something. But, now I just shrug it off and I don't take it personally. I have always found your posts to be helpful and thought you were a nice person, who really loves her dogies. |

| This hot weather is beginning to wear me down, too, I can tell you. Am so tired of being so hot every time you go about in the afternoon or early evening! And no real rain or relief in sight. But the days are beginning to get shorter so hopefully we will get some relief in a couple of weeks.
