| Diarrhea again...what food is best for Yorkies? Hi everyone, I have a 1 year old Yorkie named Sugar and about two weeks ago she started to have diarrhea. She was eating Eukanuba food for Yorkies at the time and up until this point she was fine. I stopped giving her any treats or chews and took her to the vet. He said to put her on a chicken/rice baby food diet for three days and slowly introduce regular food again (which I changed to Blue Buffalo because I thought it was better). She was fine for a few weeks and now it's back. I tried giving her the baby food again and she threw some of it up. What is the best food for a Yorkie? I know they have sensitive tummies but I'm at my wits end. Am I going to have to start cooking chicken & rice for her? I don't really have the time to do that but I want her to be healthy. Any advice.... Hugs, Marcie |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I personally think you have to find what works with your little one. I consulted with my vet and she just put Taycie on a Royal Canin RX diet. I too, got to my wits end about her food and I just want her to be comfortable and healthy. If she was mine, I would be consulting with my vet to rule out any other health conditions. I would also check some of these recent threads out, they offer some really great advice regarding food. They also opened my mind up.. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ellie-may.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-dog-food.html I feel like I am missing a thread with more info... hmmm.. can't find it... I used to be all for the healthy holistic dog food, and if you look back at some of my previous posts... I was.. but after brand after brand, there was always an issue rather it be GI or itchiness.. I am not saying one is better then the other, I know many that do fantastic on many holistic brands, it just doesn't work for us. I just got to the point where her quality of life is more important and if she needs and RX diet. So be it. Every dog is different and every dog thrives on something different. I say find what works and stick with it!

| Intestinal issues is a common Yorkie thing. If she is going to start throwing up everything, then more testing should be done. Blood work, fecal testing, and if all else fails, a biopsy should be done. Sometimes food can manage the problem (if it's something along the lines of IBD), but a lot of times drugs are also needed. Which ones have been tried? I'd try a GI rx diet from your vet and see where that gets you along with some bloods and a fecal and probably something like metronidazole if they think that'd be a good idea. If that doesn't work, then I'd talk to the vet about going further. She should not stay on a food that is upsetting her tummy. At the same time it can take up to 3 weeks to evaluate a food and how it is going to react in the intestines. You should know if it will have a positive or negative impact in that amount of time. However, if her tummy is really upset, then it's time to talk to the vet about trying something else like an rx diet.

| Thanks for your advice. I talked to my groomer that has Yorkies and she recommended Natural Balance Lamb Meal and Brown Rice. She also said she cooks up some chicken and rice when they are having "poopy" problems. I just brought her home from the groomers with a cute red feather bow in her hair. The one thing that upsets me is that I just paid alot of money and I don't see where she looks any different. She was supposed to get a haircut, teeth cleaned, nails trimmed, and ears cleaned. Maybe it's just me! I still think she looks cute! Hugs, Marcie Sugar Red Feather Bow 2011.jpg |

| I think your baby looks adorable in her new bow. If you want her shorter, just explain to the groomer next time that you were hoping she would take a little more hair off. The best food for your Yorkie is one that they willingly eat and do not get sick from- there is no one food that works for everyone. I have had success with Natural Balance foods in my house so that is what we feed. If your little one was eating the same food for awhile with no problems though, I would take her to the vet to rule out a medical cause for the stomach issues. Good Luck

| My furbaby has had tummy troubles off and on since I took her off her puppy food. We were using Blue at first, mixing the chicken and rice canned food with the chicken and rice dry. Finally the vet suggested switching to a fish based food. So we are now on Wellness whitefish and sweet potato canned food with the small breed super 5 dry bits. So far, so good with this particular combination. But, I agree, what works for one might not work for all. I can say my Lucy absolutely LOVES this whitefish canned food, while I cannot stand the smell. lol |
