YorkieTalk Newbie! | HELP! Yorkie skin problem.. irritated skin, hair falling out! About a month ago I noticed a golfball sized black spot on my 2 year old yorkies back. I noticed that the hair was falling out in that spot. The skin also turned dark, and began peeling off. I took him to the vet, and the vet said it looked like some type of burn... possible came into contact with a chemical, or a sunburn, and said not to worry about it. The hair has began growing back, but it is black? in the meantime, the spot has grown up his back, mostly around or touching his spine. The hair is falling out in these spots, and growing back black. The skin in these areas is red, and irritated. Im concerned because his hair is falling out. His legs, head, and underside are all fine, its only his back. Has anyone had this happen to their yorkie? I will post pictures. |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. I'm sorry your baby is having this problem. I would take him to a dermatologist as soon as possible. The dermatologist will likely save you a lot of heartache, time, and money, and most importantly, save your boy from suffering. This isn't just a cosmetic issue, it relates to his health. I would be suspicious of a vet that said it is a chemical or sunburn and not to worry. Is your dog exposed to chemicals? Sunburn probably wouldn't be localized to one spot.

| I am no health expert, but imagine this could be caused by several things. I highly recommend making an appointment with a vet dermatologist. They are more trained in this area and can do things such as skin scrappings and skin biopsies. Good luck with this and let us know what you find out.

| I would definitely get a second opinion. If he has had shots recently, I would be suspect. My son's dog had a similar problem some time ago and it turned out to be cutaneous vasculitis. The vet he uses was not on the day he took her in and the vet who saw her thought it was a burn...he told her no way, she was not burned. Anyway...they put her on prednisone for a week...once they took her off it started up again. He went back and the regular vet was in and when she saw her, she knew immediately what it was. Prednisone was prescribed for one month and she did clear up. This is not a frequent occurence and I think some vets are not familiar with it. Not saying that is what is going on with your pup....just suggesting another opinion. Good luck!

| Sorry to revisit this thread after so many years of initial posting. I'm starting to research why my puppy of 18 weeks is experiencing this dark patch on her saddle and found this thread. Any updates on what was the findings/cause and solution to he dark patch issue with Yorkie? Hoping I can get some guideance here early since the dark patch is about 1" and only one right now. I've posted my photos. |

| I agree that a second opinion would be in order. Does he itch or seem disturbed by the skin problem? It is highly unlikely to be a burn unless you keep your dog in direct sunlight for long periods of time...which I doubt. And how often do you have chemicals spilling on your dog? Never, I would hope. The fact that it is spreading is concerning. |

If it is the skin, you should take her to a vet. Hair...I would be less inclined to worry about it. Sometimes, if they lose hair in spots, it can come back black.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog food I honestly think dog foods are causing skin problems for them. I took dee dee to the vet with severe itching and 2 bald spots on her side. Vet put her on a strict diet of hills science diet zd. We bathed her with hy lyte shampoo and I put coconut oil on her coat. Finally she has a full coat and is not itching. My other yorkie got pancreatitis. He has been on the zd the last year and no problems. Vet said I could switch him to hills dd which is venison. He likes it better. I add a little egg white and steamed carrot. Hope you can find healing in the right choice of food. My Jojo is eating wellness. He is fine on that. |

| My Lotus had similar skin problem but the Vet said Hi, My Lotus is a 3 yr old Yorkie with very similar problems. We went to see the vet , they said it was allergies, that she was chewing her own fur off. They prescribed antihistamines and told me to keep her on regular flea treatments. Lotus is silver Yorkie that had long beautiful silky coat. A few months ago I noticed about half an inch dark spot on hair after a grooming session, but I thought they shaved her but failed to tell me. I started to be concerned because that small spot has grown significantly (2x3") and now she had lost a lot of fur with a second black spot of short coarse black fur. The vet said to wait for a weeks to see results... I am not feeling confident of the diagnosis because I haven't seen my dog chew her own fur, I shaved her to monitor her better but I can see black spots on her. Has anyone else gotten similar diagnosis and did it clear up? |

YT 2000 Club Member | dog Sounds like food allergy to me. I wouldn't wait. My vet put my friends dog on a prescription diet the royal can in hydrolyzed protein is a little tastier than hills zd. That food really made a difference . Whatever you are feeding is causing the itch I bet. Some dogs are allergic to chicken. Please find a good vet able to help you and not wait. |
