| small pee's??? Hello, the last few days have been horribly humid and I have noticed that our Maya has been using her pee pads more often. But they are not her usual size, they are small pee's. Today she has had 5-6 small pees and only one poo....she usually poo's 2 -3 times. She has not been very hungry, we usually add yogurt in her breakfast meal, the last 3 -4 days I have been adding cottage cheese instead, which she loves, but the last 2-3 mornings she hasn't seem to be interested in eating her breakfast. I have her on Acana and am wondering if this is to high in protein, since she doesn't get a whole lot of excerise. She don't seem to be in any discomfort, but I'm confused about the change in the size of her pee's and am wondering if she might have a UTI or maybe crystals...there is not blood in the urine. Maybe I'm thinking too much, it could just be the humid weather since we don't have AC.....any thoughts??? |

| Not sure it will help u much but... This week it has been in the 90-100's here in Maryland. Mickey has also been using his pee pads much more and smaller pees. Like you said 5-6. He is drinking more water too. I take them out for much shorter times. Out in the front yard and then back inside. Max is fine with that and does all his business in a short time. Mickey has always taken longer so he is using his pee pads much more with the heat (Max is not pad trained). Make sure the urine color is not dark. Mickey's are really light like water so it tells me he is drinking enough water for the heat increase. * If they were dark small pee spots I might think it is an infection. Just make sure ur pup is getting plenty of fresh water. Mickey likes ice cubes to play with too.

| Sometimes smaller pee could mean a UTI. A simple urinalysis will be able to tell if she has an infection or crystals in the urine. I would also make sure she is eating and drinking normally and if she isn't, she should be seen by a vet.

| I think it is the heat and humidity if you don't have a/c. My Teddy holds off on eating when he knows he is going to go outdoors in the heat. When we come back inside and he cools off, he cleans his bowl. He also doesn't eat as much when his activity level decreases. We praise and treat for trips to the piddle pad, so there are days when Teddy is bored and goes often and barely makes a dime size spot for attention. Be careful not to overdo it with the cottage cheese, especially when it is hot. If the pattern keeps up, I agree that a urinalysis is a good idea.

| Thanks for the responses. I have noticed this morning she didn't want to eat her cottage cheese mixed into her acana, so I put out a fresh bowl with yogurt instead and she eat it up after having gone out and played with a new friend. I did the same this evening and she eat it up. Maximo, why caution about the cottage cheese? Her pee's seem better, she hasn't gone on her pad's today, we've been home each time she wanted to go out and potty....will keep an eye out... It has finally rained this evening and much of the humidity has reduced, am hoping the worse is over. I think all that heat and humidity got to her just as it has for the rest of us. Thank's again, it's comforting to know when I'm worried that there is a community here to offer their insights. God Bless you and your lovely yorkies!!! |

| My non-expert dietary opinion .....My first concern is sodium content. The cottage cheese container that I have here indicates that a single serving has 17% of the daily recommended allowance for sodium for humans. That is a lot. Not sure what that would mean for doggies. My other concerns are fat and protein content, and the fact that it is a dairy product. This worries me especially when they are subjected to hot weather. Last week after an evening walk, I misjudged how warm the boys were and I gave them their usual yogurt treat when we returned home (half a teaspoon, and I have big boys). Teddy vomited within minutes, and I am willing to bet that he would not have thrown up if I had handed him a couple kibble. These little additions we make to our dogs' daily intake ideally should not constitute more than 10% of their diet. It is really easy to un-balance a dog's diet and do harm. Acana is a great food and many dogs thrive on it, but I will say that Max dried out when he ate it for a month. He was always very thirsty and he had trouble with his bowel movements. It didn't work for him. Glad to hear you got some rain and I hope you have some cooler temps headed your way.

| Thank's Maximo, I haven't noticed Maya drinking less after changing her from Royal Canin to Acana. I did notice that she didn't scratch or lick her paws the way she was with RC. I am wondering if Acana is too high in protein...can't say she is overly active, evening walks and if there are other dogs who will play with her then she gets a great work out. I don't think she drinks very much????? But how much should an 8lb yorkie drink???? If I were to take her off of Acana, what would be a great substatute???? I tried taste of the wild and I personally found it too smelly and Maya breathe was horrible...major fishy... I am thinking of measuring her water every morning and try to figure out exactly how much she is drinking. I have noticed in the last month or so, her pee is somewhat darker but then she isn't a puppy (9mos) puppy and she has had her first heat....she also got very sick while she was in heat, some kind of baterial infection and she was at the vet's over night. She came home and had to be on prescription for 20 days. I will be arranging for her to be spayed and will ask for a urine test and of course more blood work. Any feed back or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank's |

His poops were really hard and it was difficult for him to expel them. He really struggled. I tried adding water to his kibble and he didn't like that. Then I tried adding canned food, which I decided was too much protein and fat and not worth staying on this brand of kibble. Acana has something like 33% protein, which is middle of the road. There is a lot of debate about protein percentages and what is appropriate for Yorkies in particular. Some people argue that the sky is the limit and others say no more than 24-26%. I know of very healthy dogs in all categories. I don't think it was the protein that didn't work for Max. It was the Acana formula in general. Just not the right food for him.

| Max and Teddy eat Fromm Chicken a la Veg kibble, which is about 24% protein if I remember correctly and lower in fat. It works very well for them, so I am sticking to it.
