| Nails! So I'm not exactly sure but I think my puppies nails are too long. He is my first dog so I'm not really sure where they should be at. Can anyone post a picture of their yorkies nails? I know we need to get on top of it now and cut them every few days to get them to the right length but how fast does the quick retract so that we can trim them again? He does not cooperate whatsoever when it comes to being held down or sitting still especially if we have some kind of tool in our hands. So we sat down with treats and rawhide in hand and I was only able to clip three nails. The first one went fine, the second bled ALOT but I had only trimmed a very small amount, the third one I was scared so I went even smaller and it still bled. So at that point I decided we need to take him to a professional, because when he's scared he's a little more willing to cooperate with strangers for some reason. I'm just scared they are going to clip every single nail to where it bleeding and I don't want him in pain. Will the nails clipped to short be sensitive or painful for a few days after? |

| When I have taken my dogs to a professional they always use a nail trimmer that sands them down. It is like a dremmel. ANd so much safer then clipping them. I found one at a small pet store that is rechargeable .It is quiet too. If the nails blees then you have hit a vein and this is extremely painful. THe problem is that the pup is going to associate the clipper with pain , and will react .

| My dog's nails are always too long. I can't stand to do the trimming myself as I freak out that I'm going to hurt him. I can't let mom do it because I freak out with her doing them. Dad can't do them he is blind in one eye. So I take Bentley to the vet once a month and pay $12 to have the vet tech do the nails. I hate it when I get an inexperienced vet tech doing his nails because they never do it right and they make him bleed. GRR So I'm torn. If I can figure out a way to calm myself down to do it myself I'd do it. Though Bentley wouldn't like it one bit. But I'm gradually getting used to the idea of doing it myself. I may actually buy a good pair of clippers so that I can do it. Not sure when I'll get around to buying them though.

| On white nails you can see the quick on top, but, black nails you have to look on the backside. Kayla has a long cuticle so its better to just trim alittle at a time until you get use to it and relaxed. It will probably help your puppy to get more relaxed too if you just do alittle at a time. Sometimes I just do Dudley's back ones and wait on the front ones because he hates having his front nails done. Good luck and take it slow and easy. |

My furkids Donating Member | I trim their nails at bath time. I let their feet soak in the water while I am shampooing them. I let the water out , put on the conditioner then trim the nails. The water softens them a bit and you don't get that "snap". Believe me.....they don't like it either and I've been trimming their nail since they were pups....sometimes they aren't too bad and I can get them done quickly...other times I can't finish because the pull so much. I HATE doing their nails!
