Senior Yorkie Talker | Incontinance in spayed yorkie?? - help! Hi there, my yorkie Millie was spayed less than 2 months ago and since then she seems to be having little 'accidents'. Shes a year and a half old and usually is naughty and occassionally pees on the carpet but she runs and hides as she knows shes done wrong, but a few times now, she has come running up to me with her ears down and being really quiet like somethings wrong and when i pick her up i find all her bum and back legs wet with urine. i think she knows shes weed herself by accident as she comes to tell me and genuinely seems upset about it but i dont understand why she seems to be doing this? i thought incontinance only happens in older dogs?? After i find shes wet, if i let her out she still has a very big wee outside so i cant really understand how theres so much wee! we let her out all the time and she asks us if she needs to go out in between. obviously i never tell her off when this happens as its not her fault but it is costing me alot in doggie shampoo and conditioner with baths! im abit concerned about my baby as i dont like her being and obviously as shes quite young im wondering why its happening. is it something that happens to all female yorkies when they are spayed??? (shes my first one) all the help and ideas you could give would be imensley appriciated!! x x

| First, an immediate vet visit is needed to rule out UTI and stones. UTIs are common after spay, and left for two months is a really bad thing. If everything is clear, then you may be dealing with spay incontinence. It doesn't happen to all spayed dogs (actually, very few). Your vet might choose to put her on Proin to see if that helps. After she is cleared medically, you can invest in diapers. You have to be very careful with these though or risk urine scald.

Senior Yorkie Talker | ah right ok, i will try to make a vet appointment asap. it dosent happen all the time, mabe once a week or so (roughly 6 times a month) but its obviously embarrassing her the poor little thing. i will speak to the vet tomorrow if i cant get an appointment and see what she says. she knows Millie very well as shes seen her since we got her as a tiny pup. would stress have anything to do with it?? when she had her little accident today my sister was over with her two border collies and her baby. Millie always gets on with them and plays with them and puts them in their place but im not sure if it could be the stress of alot of "bodies" in the house??

| My 2 year old is incontinent, so it doesn't only happen in older dogs... Your pup needs to be seen by a vet.

| Princess was spayed a while back & she was having accidents. Both potty training mistakes (a total relapse, actually) & accidental urination. We noticed it especially when we'd arrive at my parents, they have dogs & she gets so excited. For a while now she's been 100%. If it's nothing medical, maybe it could be from a lot of excitement or she just needs a little more time to get things back in order after her spay. No vet exp. just my two cents, hope your baby's better soon.

Senior Yorkie Talker | she dosent do it all the time, but i havnt been there everytime its happened, so im not sure of the situation in which shes in when it happens. she does do excitement wees now and again when someone comes home and fusses her before letting her out but thats on the carpet, leaving her completely dry. when she has her 'accidents' ive searched the house for a wet patch but cant usually find one but shes soaking and its all over her bum, back legs and tail to the point shes soaked. this never happened before she was spayed so im thinking it could be something to do with the spay, even though the vet never said there were any threats or risks of this happening and just to let you all know, nearly three hours after her accident and me bathing her, Millie is still in a strop about having a bath lol!

| I was just reading about the information others offered... A lot of factors and variables with females especially post spay, anyways I was wondering about the amount of urine. Is it a tinkle, drops, or a full on puddle? Edit: Perhaps her perceived embarrassment is her being confused? Like she had no muscular awareness of peeing on herself-the urine just appeared in her perception?

| I hope you find out why she is doing this. I hate for her too feel embarrassed. My Sassy was spayed 6 weeks ago and I am so happy that she hasn't had any problems, neither did Tessie, she is 2. Keeping you in my thoughts, give Millie lots of extra hugs.

| The OP described the rear and back legs soaked with urine. This is because of leakage during rest or sleep. Most of the time it is a hormonal issue which as I mentioned before, stilbestrol will correct the imbalance. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | WOW! i havnt been on here for a few days and there is loads of messages! lol thanks guys! she never seems to have an accident when sleeping or resting that i know of, she wakes myself and my fiance' up about 4 times a night to be let out for a wee but then is fine after shes let outside. when ever ive been around when shes had an accident shes just been pottering around the house or following me around as usual and alerts me when its happened, i can never seem to find a puddle or stain anywhere in the house when it happens yet i find her back end soaked through. my mum was looking after her yesterday and said she was squeaking to go outside for a wee, so my mum let her out and Millie wouldnt go, so my mum let her back in and ten minutes later she was outside and (luckily) took Millie with her when Millie had a VERY large wee as if she was at bursting point. Im not sure if she may have a bladder infection thats painful to her when she wees to shes trying not to go or if she just cant tell when shes full. I will be popping up to the vets tomorrow morning to try and get this sorted as i hate the thought of my little girl being in pain or discomfort. (not sure if it makes a difference but i thought i should add, she is eating and drinking just as much as normal, if not eating a bit more!) x

| You might want to take her back to the vet. I personally have had discomfort due to an infection and it did make me feel like I need to run to the potty all of the time and then nothing and then I really would need to go. Maybe all she needs is an antibiotic. |
