| Chew Bones? My little puppies are big time chewers. They are currently 15 and 13 weeks. A lot of the chews for puppies I have found at Petsmart say they are recommended for puppies 6 months or older. So....what are safe options for my little ones? I bought them a couple of rawhide bones. I am super paranoid that they will bite off a piece and swallow it, so I am constantly watching them and cutting off pieces anytime it looks like they have a piece they might be able to eat off. Max just gets that look on his face as if to say, "Noooo, I have been working on that for an hour!" |

| 100% safe chews do not exist. A lot of people on YT like bully sticks, Nylabones, marrow bones, CET chews, etc. They each have an upside and a downside. The really hard ones that they can't get pieces off of to swallow can easily break teeth. The softer ones that they can get pieces off of can cause obstructions. Rawhides can cause esophageal obstructions and should not be given. Some chews like pig ears (and debatably bully sticks) carry large amounts of bacteria that you may not want a pup chewing on your couch. When in doubt, talk to your vet because if something does go wrong one day from the chews you use, they will be the one fixing the problem... Always good to see what they feel are the safest. We do stuffed animals and stuffed animals only here.

| They have a lot of stuff and stuff-free toys. One thing they seem to like is ice cubes. They have the tug/chew rope and seem to like that also. They are not allowed on the furniture yet because they are so small right now. They have beds and blankies on the floor and have taken to chewing stuff there - got lucky there. They go to the vet on Saturday for their puppy shots, so I will ask the vet. Thanks for the info - appreciate it. Last edited by AbbyMax; 06-23-2011 at 07:13 PM. Reason: correct sentence |

| Rope toys can cause intestinal blockages if the pup manages to eat some of the strings, as happened to more than one member here. When Max was teething, we used stuffed animals. These require close supervision and frequent checks for damage that may allow the pup to get to the stuffing. Max chewed the butts off of quite a few Hartz stuffed dogs, lol. We always had someone with him, so he never got any stuffing. I also sewed bones, squares, and other shapes using a tightly woven poly fabric that was almost like microfiber. The tight weave prevented Max from being able to sink his teeth in and rip the fabric easily. I put a heavy seam at the ends of the toys and these made for great chewing and rubbing against sore gums. We can't have any fuzzy fabrics because Max will chew the fibers off in seconds. I agree with Crystal, there is no 100% safe chew in the world. Supervision is key.

| Cody is an "aggressive" chewer. When he was teething like many on this post, we tried a variety of chews (I wish I had a $ for everyone I threw away). As a pup he loved bully springs so we let him have them (under supervision) and it kept him from chewing things he shouldn't. We couldn't give him the stuff-free toys because he would destroy them. Now that he's older, he doesn't care as much for bully springs and prefers nylabones. But he still destroys most other toys so he only gets to play with stuffed animals when we can watch him carefully. |

| I have bought almost every toy and bone at Petsmart. I have decided the safest one for mine are the Nylabones, I usually buy the smaller ones. When they chew on them long enough to where they get small enough to fit in their mouth I throw them away. I tried ropes, stuffed toys, rubber toys and they destroy all of them which could be very dangerous if they got pieces in their throats. They also love ice cubes, they run to the refrig. every time I get ice. It is also safe and they think it is a treat.

| My dogs chew the flexible Nylabones. I've given them to puppies under supervision. ETA: ice cubes can crack teeth, so I don't feed them.

| Bully sticks and Himalayan chews here. Should be fine for puppies. We tried Flexi Nylabone... He chewed chunks off within 10 minutes and he's not even what I'd call an aggressive chewer. I'd like him to enjoy Nylabone but he doesn't like the harder kinds, and I don't really trust them if he's getting pieces off so quickly.

| I don't like chews like bullies, himalayans, etc... I have dealt with broken teeth and they are not fun. I buy these soft dental chews called get naked or something and mine love them, I also give them dehydrated sweet potato, or stuffed kongs- those are the best because they can be filled with anything.

| The other problem with ice cubes is they can cause belly aches, at least they did with Max. I fed him way too much crushed ice once when he was teething. Poor baby suffered. I limited him after that by holding the ice cube and allowing him to suck on it. Many dogs don't have this problem, but I thought I would warn the OP of the possibility.

Mine also loves the get naked chews, they kind of dissolve as they are chewed vs coming off in chunks which I think is a lot safer.. it keeps my pup occupied and happy so I'm happy too! | |

YT Addict | My baby LOVES the harder nylabones. We tried one of the flexi ones and she liked it so-so but the harder ones are her absolute favorite. I've been trying to get her to chew on em so her baby teeth will fall out quicker. So far only 1 on the bottom has fallen out tho Also she has tons of stuffed and stuffing-free animals but she mostly just sleeps with those. Oh and she has a rope thing in the shape of a dog, it doesnt have all the loose strings on the ends like most ropes do and she's not THAT aggressive of a chewer so the rope is still intact after her chewing on it for the last 4 months.

Those soft dental chews only last Jackson all of 1-2 minutes. He does love them though! I am going to buy some of those get naked chews... Bully sticks he will chew on for 30 mins-1 hour.

| I use stffed kongs, dehydrated sweet potato chews, antlers, and bulley sticks. Gizmo loves to chew and it actually keeps him occupied enough that I can get some stuff done around the house!! I've actually converted my family, who is a Cairn family, from rawhide to bulley sticks and their dogs have less upset tummies now.
