Default Best dog food for Pancreatitis???

Hello all,

My little one was diagnosed with Pancreatitis few years ago and although we are very careful on what food we give him, he had an attack few days ago and he is in the recovering mode.

We give him and his brother white chicken breast (boiled of course) along with white rice each morning and just give them their kibbles during dinner time. They have been eating Flint River Ranch Lamb meal, millet & rice formula for years. Any of you know if this is too much high in fat???

We are suppose to feed our little angle "low fat" diet and was wondering if there are any moms out there who knows an excellent food diet source for a dog suffering from pancreatitis? That'll be great.

Thank you!!!

My little Cricket had chronic pancreatitis. Her vet prescribed Hills I/D canned. This did help keep her pancreatitis under control. We also stopped treats like cheese, beggin strips, anything high fat. Hope this helps.

The Honest Kitchen has a formula called Verve. It's 8% fat. Also, Natural Balance LID formulas are about 10% fat as well.

I would consult with your veterinarian before trying a new food. They would be able to tell you a safe range of fat that would be safe for your baby. I also know many here have had success with the prescription diets available from your Vet.

Pancreatitis is something I have personally not dealt with but I know many her on YT will be able to help!

Thanks for the replies guys! Yeah, I did hear about the prescription Hills diet but I wonder if my little one will even eat it because he's very picky about his kibbles.

The one I am currently feeding him has following %. Can you please see if this is way too high in fat for him?

Crude Protein (Min.) 23% Crude Fat (Min.) 10% Crude Fiber (Max.) 4% Moisture (Max.) 10% Ash (Max.) 9% Caloric Density (KCAL/Lb.) 1476 Caloric Density (KCAL/Cup) 394 Grams/Cup 122 pH Level 6.8 Carbohydrates (Avg.) 44% Omega-6 Fatty Acids 2.83% Omega-3 Fatty Acids 0.87% Omega-6/Omega-3 Ratio 3.25/1

Rosie is on Science Diet I/D can and dry food. She has a very sensitive tummy and it really seems to work for her.

23% protein is way too high for a pancreatitis patient. And it sounds like homecooked food is making up a large portion of the diet. That is fine if it is balanced by a veterinary nutritionist. Since it's not balanced, it can lead to heart and blood issues, etc. over time.

Most foods from the store will be too high in fat. You may find a few. If in doubt, ask about an rx diet.

Low fat is not the only requirement for a dog with pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is triggered by more than fat, and it is not known all the things that trigger pancreatitis, so buying any old low fat dog food on the market is not a wise idea. You need to ask your vet for a specific recommendation. One commercial food that was recommended to us was the Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Lowfat which is suitable for my dog with pancreatitis. However, I do not feed this food as I home cook for my dog with the help of a board certified veterinary nutritionist. You mentioned home cooking and you should not be feeding chicken and rice without the diet being appropriately balanced by a vet.

Thank you so much for all the wonderful advise. I've told my vet. for years the things I feed my kids and they have all said they sound good. I just boil white chicken breast every morning and them mix them up with white rice...the vet said that was a good diet for my kids. Then again, they were not nutritionist or per say. I am so confused. Is this not a good diet for them?

No it's not a suitable diet unless you are giving the correct amounts and supplementing the diet.
