| Confused and a bit Disgusted!!! Im trying to post another question in hopes that this time someone will help me ... While cleaning up after my dogs in the backyard yesterday, I found some rather gross looking things moving around in 2 piles of stool... I immediately called the vet and made appts for both dogs... They said it is tape worm,,,, and that is caused by fleas!!! Well both my dogs are treated for that and my lil Diamond is also medicated for Heartworm which also helps with fleas... So I guess you can say she is double protected! So y am I spending money on preventative care if it doesnt do its job??? Also, this morning I kept my eye on them and when they went out I checked to see which dog has it... Well neither of them had anything in their stool... Does it show up everytime? When I take them in will they test them first or just treat them? Im so confused and must say VERY upset that Frontline isnt doing its job... Maybe Im over~reacting... I never had any problems with our Chihuahua. Thank you!!! |

| I'm sorry, I have no experience with this. I would think that the vet would want a stool sample so that they can be sure, before they treat. Are you sure it wasn't maggots? I would want them tested first. Good luck. |

As these are 'new' dogs, it wouldn't hurt to have your vet do a health check up on them, to rule out any problems either may have to start with. If all is good then go from there. You can request they be tested first, or let the vet decide depending on what he finds during their exams, if anything. BTW: Hi and Welcome to YT!

No Longer a Member | I would bring in a fresh sample for the vet from each of the dogs. Make sure you label and double bag it. On the flea preventative, I feel your pain. I have to apply Frontline to my cat every 3.5 weeks in order for it to remain active. It's insane, and frustrating considering flea and tick season is year round in Naples. |

| Thanks! Yes, it was the receptionist that told me what it was. Ive never experienced it before so I dont know. I thought about taking samples with me, but there isnt anything in it today. Im not sure if there would be something in it every time. My husband said maybe it was from flies laying eggs. That is gross but I would prefer it be that. Ive been sick and havent been able to clean up for the past two days, so hopefully thats what it was. I think I will tell the vet or vet tech to test before they treat. |

| I think they can still get tapeworms even if they are on a preventative. It is my understanding and I may be wrong they get the tapeworms from eating fleas or flea eggs. My guys both got them last summer and they were on a preventative. Here is a link that describes the tapeworm and ways to prevent it. Tapeworm in Dogs - A Definitive Guide to Tapeworms in dogs I took a fecal sample to my vet for a correct diagnosis and was given pills to give them. It took care of them right away.

| Thank you Michelle. I just went out back looking for more so I could take it in, but they were all clean... Nothing crawling around... So I dont know what to think! If they have it, will it show in every bowel movement? |

| Not always, just when the worms have detached. Have you noticed anything in the area where they sleep that looks like little grains of rice? That is the dead segments of the tapeworm. Also look in the hair around the anal area, sometimes the dead segments of the worms get caught in the hair.

| Dumb question, could another dog have gotten into your yard? Sorry, poor manners - Welcome to YT! (I am not sure why your pic is not showing up. Did you upload the pic as an "avatar"?)

| I havent noticed anything. My Pom always has "stuff" stuck to him and I have to clean the area, I havent seen anything. All there bedding etc is white so that might be hard to see... Ill check tho to make sure. Our back yard is fully fenced in and no other dogs can get in and mine cant get out. I have yet to see any fleas either... They love me so if there are any, I would know ... Im gonna keep my eye on them for the next day or 2 and see what happens. Im going to treat my yard just to be safe. I dont know if I put a pic for my avatar.... Duh! Ill check that as well... Lol |

| All of your pups should have fecals and/or go on a broad spectrum dewormer from the vet. Best to test to see what is going on. If they have been to the vet recently, then you may only need to take samples in instead of having an appointment. Just depends. All they would have to do is eat a flea for tapeworms which could be licked off the ground or could be crawling on them. Giving a flea preventative doesn't necessarily take care of the environment and doesn't immediately kill fleas when they get on the dog.

| I think that you would see the worms every time until they are treated. If I remember correctly when our Beagle had worms it showed up every time. Easy to get rid of. Vet gave me a pill to give him and then they were gone. And yes they are disgusting. Lol.
