| Eyes gunk so bad; skin raw!! Help!! I have been fighting with Millie's bad eyes for almost a year now; nothing seems to work. They water all the time, we give her benadryl. She is on California Natural Lamb and Rice food, which she loves. But her eyes are AWFUL. She is allergic to chicken we know, but we've had that under control for a long time, and she doesn't scratch anymore. She has been to the vet to check for blocked tear ducts, been on two antibiotics. Her eyes clear up, but go right back to being very gunky. I am doing everything I can to wipe them and keep her face clean. I recently discovered while bathing her that her poor skin on her nose is RAW and almost bleeding, I guess from all the constant moisture. I have to really pull back the hair there and look, but it's definitely irritated and red. I felt SO bad when I saw that, but I am lost! I've mentioned her eyes to the vet several times, and he tells me to use the daily saline for her eyes, but she FREAKS. I really don't want to use anything like Angel Eyes because of the constant antibiotic. She is only 3 lbs so I worry about her little body with all the medications. Please help me!! Has anyone has any experiences like this? |

| there are cleaning pads that might alleviate it a bit. I'm sure that won't fix it though. bump |

| I would consult a specialist. I agree, Angel Eyes and other products won't solve whatever is making her eyes water so badly. Sounds like it must be related to her skin/allergy issues. What color is the eye discharge? What hair products do you/the groomer use?

| I agree. If the visits to the vet aren't getting you anywhere, I'd consult a specialist or try another vet's opinion on the problem.

| My westie was diagnosed with Dry Eye Syndrome and requires daily drops and constant cleaning. So her problem is almost opposite of what your baby has. BUT it took a couple different vets before they recognized this. It might help to find a second opinion. Good Luck with this. We have been dealing with this for over 6 yrs now.

| My Maddie was diagnosed with KCS, dry eye, a few years ago. However, she would produce so much green mucus discharge it would literally ooze from her eye. We tried several medications with no luck and recently had surgery to help the problem. What type of discharge is Millie having? I HIGHLY recommend you seek the care of an opthamologist. Eyes are nothing to mess with and can be very painful. We went through two vets before being referred to a specialist. On our first visit to UT, the optho knew what was causing the problem. Keep us posted. I will say a prayer for your little girl to feel better. |

| When we found Lucy, she had awful eye gunk and a constant wet, drippy nose. I thought she had a cold, but the vet said it was because she had impacted bad teeth. After her dental surgery and healing time, all eye gunk and runny nose are totally gone. Just sharing.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | When the vet gave antibiotics, did the vet actually say there was an infection? Or, where they given as just "let's try this"...? What color is the gunk? If it's greenish...that's almost always an infection. What else is going on w/ the nose? It's not from moisture. Is it the area up where the nose meets the head - or is it down on the snout? Is she itching that area? Bc the itching can def make it raw. They should do a skin scraping of that area on the nose. Is she itching anywhere on the body? Chewing or licking her paws? If those symptoms are present, then I'd suggest you see a Vet Derm first - to see about allergies. Vet Derms are simply amazing at getting skin issues addressed properly. We see a vet derm and we LOVElovelove him ! When there, have them peek at the teeth - as someone above mentioned. The other angle is to see a Vet Ophthalmologist - as they have instruments to see they eye that regular vets do not have. One member here at YT had a kiddo whose eyes had chronic issues - she'd been to her vet several times; she then went to an Ophth and they found this micro-hairs/lashes growing inside her lids, which irritated the eyes all the time.

| Wow, I finally feel like maybe we can figure out what is going on here! Very interesting about the teeth, because Millie's teeth have gotten worse in the last 6 months and her breath is starting to stink! BUT we've taken her to the vet since then and he looked at her teeth and said I needed to brush them more, but I brush every day almost! (But I probably wasn't as good about it before that visit). Also, I live in a small town and I'm worried there won't be any specialists near me. Millie has her 2 year check up at the end of the month, so I have a long list of points to bring up to the vet when we go! As for her eyes, there is some brown in the color, but very light and I figured it was just dirt around her eye maybe? It's clear 50% of the time and light brown the other 50%. Big eye boogers though! I try to keep the hair out of her eyes, so I don't know if that would be the problem. But sometimes her "mustache" sticks up in her eyes if she's been sleeping As for her nose, it's where the nose meets the head; she never scratches on her face that I see her, but she does sometimes scratch her body. We have battled her allergies with chicken in the past, and it's A LOT better, but she still can scratch sometimes. We have never had an allergy test because the vet didn't want to draw blood at that time because of her weight. But we are 100% positive she's allergic to chicken by mistakes with food, but I guess we don't know what else she could be allergic too. We only use hypoallergenic detergent in our house. When she was put on the antibiotic, it was kind of like "let's just test it out" and it worked. It cleared up right away, but came right back afterwards. That is what's so frustrating. I just worry about her so much!! I want to get her healthy. I love her too much and put way too much time into her for her to be going through this! I have gone to two separate vets in the past, but not with her eyes the #1 reason for going... Okay, I think that was everything! Thank you SO much for the support and answers! |
