| What do you think? Gave Uni Solid Gold for large breed! I ran out of Honest Kitchen and now that she is on a 3x a day feeding schedule (2 tbsp 3x a day, rather than 3 tbsp 2x a day) I needed to feed her dinner and the feed store was already closed! (I'm such a bad mommy lol) Anyway, Petco is open till 9 and they have decent food there, I used to get her Wellness there. So I wanted to try out a different food, and since I need to give her a low fat and fairly low protein diet, I looked at ingredients and % only, did not really pay attention to puppy, small breed, large breed, limited ingredients, all stages, etc. I actually wanted to try out Solid Gold, and I did look at the small breed one in particular. You know the one in the sparkly pink shiny bag with the little white dog on it the fat was way too high about 22%. I checked out the WolfKing formula and seemed better for her, 9% fat and about 22% protein. I got that one. She loves it btw. It wasn't until I checked out dogfoodadvisor.com that it was for large breeds! I did think the kibble size was a bit big, but she was able to crunch it down no problem. Do you think we should stick specifically to small breed formulas, or do you think reading labels is more important? btw I'm not changing her food permanently, it's just to tide her over till lunch tomorrow when I can get her HK again. I can also use these as treats. She loves it. It's bison meat mostly and sweet potato.

| In my non-expert opinion, I think the food should be fine. I checked the Solid Gold website and here is what they say about their small breed formula: We recommend feeding small breed puppies the Just a WEE BIT formula. It is specifically formulated for smaller breeds which have a higher calorie requirement per pound of body weight than larger dogs and the nutrient profile closely matches that of the Hundchen Flocken puppy formula. Thus, it is suitable for puppies and adults alike.I didn't know smaller breeds had a higher calorie requirement per pound. Most people here are feeding foods that are not size specific, so I don't see any problem. There isn't anything else different about the formula that I can see, no unusual nutrient ratio or ingredients.

22% fat is not good though.

| I don't think it'd be a big deal... I believe for the most part that large breed/small breed/breed specific formulas are a big marketing hype anyways! The only reason large breed owners need to look out for specific things is the calcium and phosphorus levels for proper growth of large breed puppies. But small dogs don't really have that problem!

| It's fine. Wouldn't choose to give a large breed food for more than about 3 weeks to an adult because usually the cal/phos are a bit different. Actually though, you could compare % with the small breed. May end up being comparable since a lot of claims about dog food are about marketing.

| The Yorkes try to get into Carlo's Large Breed food, while he will try to get their Merrick Puppy Plate, or even Maxines Iams Low Residue. |

| Yes, if Uni starts resembling a Saint Bernard, definitely discontinue the food.

| I bought the Solid Gold in the sparkly purple bag (don't remember the flavor) but none of my four would touch it, not even taste it. They are one company that used to use alot of 'meat meals', which are preserved with Ethoxyquin, which then is supposed to get burned off in the processing. They don't list it as an ingredient, because they don't add it to the mix.
