| Heartworm Meds & Advantix question... My wife took our little guy to the vet for his first appointment yesterday. He is only 13 weeks. They gave her tri heart plus (I think for heart worm)...it's a round crunchy tablet...but it says for up to 25 pounds. He is only 2.7 pounds. Is that too much and is this too early to start him? Also, they gave her Advantix green 0-10 pounds and told her to put it on his neck and BUM? I have used Advantix before on my previous dogs, but only put in on their necks...where on the bum do you put it...like the top of the tail or on the BUM BUM???? Thanks, Wendy

| Yes, he is old enough and heartworm meds shouldn't be split, so that is the appropriate size. I can't help you on the other one because I'd never put flea meds that low down. They can lick it off and then you will have a toxicity problem. I'd read the instructions that it came with or go to the Advantix site. Those types of meds are supposed to go between the shoulders only.

| Never heard of putting it on a dog's butt... wth. That is just dumb. Yes I put it on the shoulder blades where he can't reach it to lick it off or anything.

| I use Advantage multi, it is for heartworms and fleas. I only put it on the shoulders. They have 2 sizes up to 9 lbs and 10 lbs and over.

I'm going to go back and read the polls ... is there an adverse reaction reporting site for advantix?

I assume he is talking about the permethrin in the Advantix. It can make dogs feel like something is crawling on them. I'm sure it has caused death in some cases, but then they probably all have. Also, it's extremely toxic to cats. I'm not a fan of it, but in some areas of the US where ticks are a major issue (with the diseases that they carry), it's almost unavoidable. If ticks aren't a major concern, no way would I use it. In fact, Ellie's vet office stopped carrying in because of the itchiness side effect, I'm told. But if I live in an area with lots of ticks and tick diseases and the Frontline wasn't working, I'd be considering it.

| I've used K9 Advantix before and Max used to run from me when it was application time. I now use Frontline Plus which he tolerates a lot better. I've also read that its safer than Advantix. I would never apply on the "bum" only between the shoulder blades.

| Can anyone post a link to the polls that were referred to here? Roxxy is running out of the First Shield Trio given to her at Banfield and I'm not going to use that anymore. I was thinking of the frontline plus since ticks are common in the northeast. I would like to see the opinons of others about what to use. The directions for that med (1st shield) was to put btwn the shoulder blades. I don't know much but I would not follow directions to put it on the bum, no mater what it said. I too was worried about giving to such a small animal, it just doesn't make sense to me that dosing for a 2lb dog would be the same for a 25lb dog. I refused to put it on her until she got up to at least 3lbs and then the vet said that half of the tube would be sufficient; even then I was/am reluctant. I really would like to hear others' experiences; I know for a fact that even human meds really go by weight and not just age so it's just really hard for me to believe that an eleven inch 3 lb pooch needs the same as a 6mo lab. I know back in the day, everyone used flea collars; are they even still around? Are they effective? Roxxy is my first dog in over 25 years, I've had indoor cats so everything in doggie world is like new to me. |

However, I use Frontline from October-May and then Advantix from June-September. Since the ticks aren't AS crazy in the colder months (but unfortunately are still around). I tried to stop using any meds in the winter but he still got a few ticks now and then. We also don't have cats. My dad does but they don't interact with the dogs.

| K9 Advantix II I just ordered this online because Sadie gets a tick about every time she goes outside. However, I have since read posts on another website about dogs having seizures. Should I not give to her? She will be 1 year old tomorrow and weighs 4 lbs. 11 oz. I ordered the one that goes up to 10 lbs. I ordered it because it also covers mosquitos, and we have so much water this year. |

I too live in the northeast and have been using Frontline Plus on my dogs without any problems since they were puppies. I apply half of the frontline in between their shoulder blades. I also use Interceptor for my dogs year round for heartworm prevention.

| I'm not sure what poll we're talking about. I started one recently in the Polls section (way down at the bottom of the list of forum sections). it was just asking people what heartworm preventative they use though. Nothing about side effects, reasoning, etc.
