| Food after liver shunt.... So the Vet has Calvin on the Hill's L/D...he says that he should stay on it...the thing is is that his poops are real loose and of course he wants to eat what Bella eats...Can anyone tell me what they feed their babies after having a liver shunt? I was hoping just to get him on a lower protein food like Natural Balance or something. Obviously it would be easier if I could feed them the same food. After his surgery his liver enzymes were still a little high so the vet said that he probably has micro shunts...Obviously I want to do what is best for him but if anyone has any advice that would be great! |

| Hi...We're in the same boat here.... Tink is wanting beef flavored anything at this point (2 months post surgery). She's about had it with chicken flavored L/D. I started adding things like cottage cheese, yogurt, parmesan cheese... anything that is not a meat protein... noodles, green beans, hard boiled egg whites... just to break up the monotony for her. I am thinking about maybe starting to homecook for her and plan on discussing this with her vet at her next recheck.

| Nature's Recipe has one too, I did feed it before her surgery. I am also looking into possibly using human protein powders made with whey protein, like the stuff they sell for bodybuilders and atheletes. The doc wants my DH to eat that, as it's more easily digestable protein, so I bought some and was looking at the label one morning and that little light bulb went off in my head. So I'll be talking to Tink's vet about that too.

| Calvin had his six month post-op check up in March and he goes next week for his yearly...I'm going to talk to the vet. I know they push the Hills but if I can give him something that he will actually eat and that is better for him then i would like to do that. I am very happy with my vet but im not thrilled about the food. My friend is a vegan and feeds her shorkie the NB vegetarian and he is healthy and sturdy as can be (& his poops are nice & firm...lol). I was just wondering if it would be worth a shot...the Hills i think has 14% protein and the NB has 18%...all this is just so confusing to me! |

| Royal Canin LS Hepatic 14 is very palatable. Ordinally I'd say talk to the vet about NB or something similar, but he has already said to keep up the rx food. Does he know that it is causing loose stool? You could homecook after talking to a veterinary nutritionist. Actually, you can talk to one about changing the diet to whatever you were thinking of. They are vets who are also nutritionists and usually work for vet schools or major specialty hospitals. And the regular vet should only have part of the say. The go to person is the surgeon...

| i had originally discussed it with him when he went for his six month post op in March. He goes next week for his yearly check-up and I plan on talking to him then. I wanted to get as much info as possible before then. |

| Yes, Tink's recheck is with her surgeon too. I know the key points are premium quality (limit the junk the the liver has to eliminate), and keep it easily digestable (also easier on the liver). Is Calvin on Lactulose? Tink still takes Lactulose and Denamarin, and Ursodial to loosen the bile sludge. Plus I have to watch for her developing bladder stones, so I need to look into a good diet/recipe to help prevent them. She also just finished her antibiotics for an E-coli infection, and needs a recheck urinalysis for that. I'll ask him to recommend a Nutritionist when we go in next month. I wish he would have removed her Gall Bladder and widened her urethra while he was in there. He opened her up, found multiple shunts going to and from everywhere, checked her kidneys, cleaned out her bladder and closed her back up. (I think that's what he did, I havent seen the actual reports yet)

| Yes, Calvin is on lactulose. They repaired the one liver shunt and removed a bladder stone. When he went for his six month post op his levels were still high so they vet said that he probably has micro shunts that are inoperable. He has gained weight and seems to be doing really good. |

| Maybe the Lactulose is causing his diarrhea?

| I would ask your vet, tell him about the loose stools... the Lactulose dose can always be adjusted, one way or the other (or so I was told by my vet)
