YT Addict | poor li'l tikka... would love some opinions! So Tikka was diagnosed with a UTI a week ago, the doctor said we should see improvement in 3-5 days, and she is still leaking a dark urine when she sleeps. It's not as frequent, but it still happens. She is much more playful and def. eating better, but the antibiotics also gave her mushy stool. I called her vet today, told her that Tikka seems to have a little more energy and is definitely eating well. BUT the urine is still leaking/dark/somewhat smelly. So here's the plan with the vet: wait out this last 6 days of pills, go in on saturday for a diff. kind of antibiotic if the leaking/smell doesnt go away. the new ones will last 2 weeks as well. if she is still leaking at the end of those 2 weeks then we will do blood work and a urine culture and send it into the lab to see if there is maybe a blood resistant bacteria or something else. She definitely has a UTI according the urinary analysis we did last time, so I'm hoping it's just a tough strain of that and nothing worse. What do you guys think... has anyone had their girl/boy have this as well and not take to antibiotics right away?

| Was any bloodwork done? Has she been BAT tested?

| Yes, but the plan about how to proceed was different. If the first antibiotic worked somewhat, but not all the way, then at the very least another U/A would be done to see if there was still an infection present. If not, then we'd be looking at stones and such. If no U/A could be done (happened in our case because Ellie didn't have enough urine in her bladder), then straight to xray. Occasionally Yorkies get a type of stone that doesn't show up on xray though. culture is really not a bad idea. You'll have to do what the vet thinks is best. I'd be concerned that the antibiotic helped somewhat though. I'd assume that means that 1) there is more than one type of bacterium and it wasn't the right one to clear all of it or 2) there was an infection, but there is an underlying cause that needs to be taken care of. Hoping the next round of ABs work for her. Dark and smelling doesn't sound right.

YT Addict | KJC... Bile Acid Test? I don't think so. No bloodwork, the vet was gonna do that after the second roud of antibiotics. We will go in BEFORE the second round is done though, so like in two weeks for blood work. Jada... thanks :] really hoping it's nothing too serious/pricey but we'll be doing all we can to get her better! Ellie... the vet suggested that we do another U/A after the first week of the new antibiotics if she ends up needing them, do you think that's reasonable? And that is what our vet said, that's why she's switching the antibiotics, she said if the one doesn't work, usually the second kind they give does, she seemed pretty confident and I really like/trust her. But she also mentioned it could be a bacteria in the blood, or a diff. type of infection or even an underlying issue. What did Ellie end up having as a problem? She said no doubt that Tikka had/has a UTI. The darker urine is because of the high blood cell count in her urine, although she isn't bleeding in her urine, the count is high enough to turn the urine darker, the smell is also common in UTI's.

| It's just that that smell and the blood is persisting. Yes, another AB could work. But as the vet said, it may be something else. I can only tell you that we turn to more testing quicker here. If your vet feels she is healthy enough to go ahead and just try another AB, that's fine. If it doesn't go away or she gets another UTI in the near future, then a list of tests is most definitely indicated.

YT Addict | We have 5 days left of Zeniquin, then Saturday we pick up 2 weeks of the other kind if we can get some urine out of Tikka I will def. ask for another U/A... not sure of the name of the next pills, I'll post it when I get them. But If she isn't showing signs of improvement after the first week of the new ab's then we def. will just go ahead with the blood work/urine culture. What happened with Ellie, what all tests did you have done and what did it turn out to be? Are there any specific tests I should ask for?

| Oh, Ellie is an odd bird. She has concurrent liver issues and such, so her situation probably wouldn't be the same as your girl's, but: U/A revealed UTI Clavamox tried. Still peeing on furniture. Couldn't get urine from her, so went to xray. No stones seen. Zenoquin tried. Still peeing where she shouldn't. I think this is when we sent urine to culture and it was clean. Continued on and off to pee where she shouldn't. Went to specialist for a liver U/S and to look at bladder. Nothing found for the bladder issue. Redid culture which was clean. Tried Metronidazole to make sure it wasn't vaginitis. Decided after that that while she does get UTIs somewhat often (liver issue may contribute to the number of them she gets), a lot of it was behavioral. To do all the testing and such, it cost $650+. And she still gets one occasionally. So over time her urinary health has probably cost $800-$900. And this lead us to bile acids testing for her liver which has cost $1000+ over time on top of the amount above. Hoping for you sake that it's just a simple UTI!

YT Addict | Haha wow, for my sake I hope so too. But even $1000 would be better than something crazy that cost multiple thousands like some other pups. I'll have to price all the testing when we go to pick up the other AB's so I know what to prepare for! I know my husband wont be impressed, after Saturday we'll be up to $175 on her I def. WILL NOT complain about that... seeing all the other issues on here. But my husband might whine a little lol. How did you find out about her liver issues, I doubt Tikka has any, because she came out of heat and viola a UTI... very common way of it happening. BUT who knows maybe something else just happen to get set off around the same time. Wouldn't hurt to get a BAT I'm sure. She's def. not peeing on purpose, it's just a little damp spot after she sleeps/rests for a long time. They are getting fewer and farer between but they should have stopped after 6 days on her ab, might just be a diff. strain of infection :/ Crossing my fingers!!!

| Oh, that didn't include the supplements she was on, etc. Then pancreatitis, teeth issues, allergies, IBD, and now IVDD. We'll probably hit $9 or $10K in the near future. I decided to bile acids test just to be safe after a UTI and a vaccine reaction.

YT Addict | Haha yeah she gets a spay in August, and a baby tooth pulled if it doesn't fall out, and then whatever these costs turn out to be for the current situations. I pray nothing serious! And people say dogs are nothing like children... I will beg to differ!! Sometimes I believe they can be even more work and especially more costly!
