| Frustrated pup, looking for relief! I've been researching (mainly here) trying to figure out a resolution to my pup's itching/skin problems.. I feel I've conquered the flea problem as best I can, considering we're in a dog-friendly apartment complex and right next to woods. I keep her away from the shade/woods to avoid ticks, after having to remove a few.. But that's just an uphill battle considering how low to the ground she is, on top of summer coming around. She's been on advantix multi for 3 weeks. When I first applied it, I noted the warning that it will be less effective if the dog is bathed more than weekly. I bathe her up to twice a week.. usually once. Sure enough, 3 weeks into it she's got a few fleas around her eyes and tail. Would it be safe to reapply early? I don't see another solution.. Although I'm seriously considering treating a section of the grass and only taking her there. As far as diet, I had been using Patten's line for a few months, but didn't see any behavior change. Now I recently switched to RC on advice from another yorkie owner in the neighborhood (and many here seem to favor it). About how long should I expect to wait before a dietary change takes effect? Also, she was constipated on the patten kibble, and it's a little better already with RC, but what can I supplement to help her digestion? |

| Have you tried frontline? If you still have fleas, you obviously have not conquered it the best you can. There should be NO fleas. ANd Obviously advantix is not working if its only been three weeks , and there are fleas. And just so you know, if you see a couple on her, there is sure to be many many more. You must treat your home!!! You must clean and wash EVERYTHING. Including all blankets, pillow, carpets , etc. Every two weeks until the problem is completly solved. Which we recommed a minimum of 3 months of doing this at our clinic. Frontline is not effected by regular baths. But you must make sure the dog is completly dry when you apply it. You also must not let them get wet for 24 hrs afterward!! You also must be sure you apply it to your dogs skin! and not just the hair. You must follow all the instructions for it to work properly. ANd then treat everything in your home and clean clean clean. Untill all the fleas are gone. And you must keep frontline up to date, every 4 weeks. |

| Why not just bathe her weekly to allow the Advantix to stay potent? I use advantix and have no problems with fleas or ticks and I bathe weekly.

| I read the directions at least 3 times. I read/watched online for 20 minutes before removing the first tick because I am cautious if its beneficial. I've been treating my home like you said, washing the bedding weekly. I'm all but convinced that it's the environment outside my apartment that is the source. Maybe I should switch to frontline, but my vet gave me this prescription. I'll keep that in mind when this runs out. I am only bathing her more than weekly when she gets into mud/rain/etc. I'm going to have her body shaved close this weekend when she is groomed. Any idea if it's harmful to reapply the advantage multi early? |

| Advantage Multi is just an adulticide with heartworm preventative. It's not the best at stopping the flea lifecycle. If you want to stick with it, ask the vet about adding Program in. Frontline Plus may work. It would be more likely that that is okay to give since it's early. Either way, it's up to the vet... It takes about 12 weeks of being on an elimination diet to see if a food allergy is present. The protein and carb sources have to be novel (or a hydrolyzed rx diet from the vet). During this time, not one bite of anything else should be given. RC is not a good food for allergy elimination testing unless it's an rx allergy food.

| You CAN eliminate fleas completely 100%, even if you live in a highly flea populated area - When you put a topical flea product on a dog, first, make SURE you apply it correctly - to the SKIN, correct doseage etc. Here's the thing about Advantix, it doesn't do a great job breaking the life cycle of the fleas. I'd use Frontiline PLUS instead, it's a complete life cycle eliminator (meaning it kills eggs and larva as well as the adult fleas, and of course, ticks too). What probably happened is a few things - after you applied the Advantix, it killed all the adult fleas on your dog, BUT there were probably many many many eggs still living on her AND in your carpet, furniture etc. Once those suckers hatch, boom, more fleas. Now, if it's within the time frame of that dose still being effective (like you said, 3 weeks) it SHOULD kill those adult fleas, but if you're bathing her weekly, like the package said, could have decreased the effectivness. You won't have that issue with Frontline, it's completely water-proof after the first 24 hours and it's had a chance to dry, spread, and settle into the hair folicles. Also, as Farley's mom said, you have to really clean your appartment well, wash EVERYTHING and not just the things the things the dog comes in contact with, those suckers jump high! You shouldn't have to go too crazy cleaning more than once though if you use frontline, anything hanging around that you don't manage to get (in addition to anything she picks up outside) will be killed once it ends up on your dog. If you're seeing them around her eyes, you have a pretty darn good infestation. I'd switch to frontline plus- you can apply it now even though it's a bit early for another treatment, don't let her get wet AT ALL for 24 hours after and don't touch the application site. Then do all the cleaning. Re-apply the 28 days later and go from there. Even with an infestation as heavy as yours sounds, after 3 months on a product that kills ALL life stages of the fleas, you should be flea free You can also bathe her once per week with no issues using that product instead of the Advantix. I'd actually bathe her really well with Dawn dish soap and then let her dry 100% before applying the Frontline. As far as the bad tick problem outside - idk Advantix should be repelling those and generaly does a better job with ticks than frontline. Maybe it's just the frequent bathing making it less effective in that department. See how the frontline plus works - you may still see a tick on her, but it should be dead. Well, that was long lol, Good luck

| Thanks for all the advice! I've had a handful of dogs, and taken care of many more, but I've never been this involved in their health.. Maybe it's because of how sensitive/delicate my pooch is, or maybe I just love her more I think my biggest fault was not researching my vet choice better.. He got great reviews from what I could tell for the area, but there has to be a vet more specialized in small breeds. I also should've been more prepped on diet & flea meds before going, instead of naively trusting a doctor of medicine :P I've spent the last week really studying her diet, but I should've known better when I saw the wall of science diet products in the office.. When I asked him about the patten line I had put her on months ago, he went into a speech about how 2 factories make all the dry foods, and they are just rebranded to market to people wanting to spoil their dogs.. and went on about how the organic/holistic trend is entirely marketing and has no benefits if it's even accurate about the production quality. This led to him doting the greatness of science diet. Also, I did research into flea meds, and when I asked him about revolution, he explained that it's a 30 year-old chemical, and that nothing works better than what he prescribed.. and Frontline was dismissed as a mediocre product. This is after I expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the prevention considering she gets bathed more than a lab. So I'm going to try out some quality single meat foods like orijen, and see what works best for her.. I do think the skin irritation is mainly from flea bites/sores, because she's calmed down drastically since I reapplied the advantage. ...and she stops scratching after a shower, so at least I've found a shampoo that agrees with her. One concern I'm still lost on is that she seems to take forever to poop. I take her out for for a good 15-20 minutes when I get home in the afternoon, and she is always ready then, but pretty much any other time it's a huge ordeal. I take her out for 5 minutes at a time, And when she does, it seems difficult for her. I know I need to supplement something for her teeth, and maybe fish oils, but what could I safely give her to help her out? Oh, and I got her some baby carrots for snacks, and luckily she enjoys them |

| He does sound very set in his ways and unwilling to change which I couldn't handle. But he does make some very good points. Holistic food isn't nearly what people think it is... There aren't many factories that produce it. A lot of it is manufactured at Diamond which has a concerning history. Fronline is great; however, it is starting to lsoe effectiveness. There is a new strain of heartworm around the MS area and one of the preventatives seen to do a better job with it (tested in the lab). That would be the one that your pup is on. Not saying everyone should switch, but that may be the reason behind why he is using it. I'd say get a second opinino if you're not happy.

| Natural Flea Control and Tick Remedy. Official TripleSure Site. Flea and Tick I also live in Florida and use this product after I bathe her. They sell something very similar at Petsmart. Its all natural, it has a great smell to it and I have not seen a flea on her.

| For the constipation , you can give some plain canned pumpkin or green beans everyday. Just a small amt of either should do the trick. |
