| So overwhelmed- need puppy food suggestions please! Hi I am new to this forum and need the help of you yorkie parents! I have been reading this forum for a few days and am overwhelmed with food choices! Our puppy gets to come home in a few weeks and I have no clue what food to get her! She will be comng home on Royal Canin 33 but it doesn't seem to rate very high up there, so I have been looking at other choices. I cannot afford to spend too much so I have been looking at Chicken Soup, Premium Edge, Diamond Naturals and came across Whole Earth Farms........ what do you suggest? Any others I should look at? I was looking at ordering on Amazon since we don't live very close to any stores though we plan on taking a trip to PetSmart next week. Also how long does a 5 lb bag last a puppy? Want to make sure I don't need a larger sized bag..... ( Just curious as I grew up with golden retrievers and they ate a lot-lol) Thanks so much! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | This is a great site which analyzes foods for you. Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble She does not need to be on puppy food. I would chose a high quality all stages formula. Unfortunately you will not find the vast majority of those at Petsmart. Usually if you find a product you like ...their website will provide a list of retailers. 5 pounds will last puppy quite a while. I have 6 dogs...a 30 pound bag lasts me around a month.

| Chicken Soup and Premium Edge are good in that price range. PetSmart doesn't carry many of the good foods, do you have a Petco near by? Other good brands that are priced decently are Verus (it's a little harder to find though) and Evenger's, Nature's Variety is a good "all life stages" one who's Prairie kibble is reasonably priced as well. A five pound bag will last a young Yorkie puppy a pretty long time, I'd say about 3 weeks or so? Figure, the feeding guidlines will be about 1/2 cup per day if that helps

| When I brought home Jed he was on Royal Canin yorkshire terrier puppy, dry. He got to where he wasn't eating it. I tried several can foods to mix with it to maybe get him to eat it again. Now we are feeding Blue Buffalo puppy, it's in a blue bag and I think it's about 8lbs. He Loves it. I also feed him some blue buffalo can food for breakfast and he REALLY loves that. The canned oned we have tried were the turduckin & backyard bbq. I buy both at petsmart. The royal Canin lasted about a month but it was a 2.5 or 3 lb bag? I think thats what it was. I also got a free sample of Chicken Soup Puppy. He really likes it too. Good luck with whatever you find. Hope this helped some. |

| If you cant find at pet stores, try your local feed n tack, doggy boutiques, bakeries and grooming shops. They tend to carry good brands

| I would suggest going with the higher end foods. They may be more expensive but your puppy will get fuller faster and eat less on grain free better quality foods. Also the healthier your puppy the less you will pay for veterinary bills. I personally fed Wellness , and taste of the wild. ANd think both are excellent brands of food. |

| First off, you should buy a small bag of the Royal Canin if your breeder is not supplying it- you should not switch the puppy from what they are used to right away. Once the puppy is settled into your house, has been checked by the vet, etc. you can start a gradual change. With yorkies because they eat so little, small differences in price don't equate to much of a difference overall. Plus like someone else said, you usually see less vet visits and less health problems with the better foods. One brand I really like to recommend for people looking for something on the cheaper/ easier to find end is Natural Balance- they also have a ton of different formulas, so you can easily switch around if your dog gets bored with one variety or if you just like to give them variety.

| I have our 12 week old Yorkie, Lily, on Blue Buffalo puppy food. It is about 20.00 a bag but last a long time since they don't eat much right now. Lily has had no problems with this food and it has a high rating. |

| I fed my last 2 puppies, along with our adult dogs, Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and brown rice kibble. It is fairly reasonably priced and is a very good food. My dogs all do very well on it. You can get a "try it" coupon for a free small bag on the Nature's Variety website too. |

| We just recently switched my 2 1/2 year old to Taste of the Wild and my 9 week old loves it to. It was a 6 star food on one of those food sites. It comes in 4 flavors and we have tried two so far! It is also an all stages food. You can gt it at most tractor supply stores and some health food grocery stores! Hope this helps!

| I also saw that Nature's Variety is coming out with a puppy food line. Haven't looked into it really, but maybe some people will be interested. Nature's Variety Prairie has always done good for us. We feed it to all our dogs, from 12 week old puppies to 12 year old large dogs. They all love it. Maybe it's the freeze dried raw coating that makes them like it so much. A co-worker said his dog never really likes any food he gets. I suggested Nature's Variety, and his dog loves it and gobbles her food right up now. He's very happy that he's found something she really likes. |

Yorkie Yakker | I researched for a while and decided to go with Natural Balance sweet potato and duck small bites. It's good from puppyhood through adulthood. She seems to like it.
